I have a 1996 240sx SE and wanted to know if i have a VLSD standard and if it is an option how can i look at it and tell, I used to be able to peel out with both tires leaving rubber behind me, but today at school (UTI) i put my car on a rack and had someone put it in gear and drive it, only one wheel spun around, and now it doesnt feel like i can peel out with both wheels, does this mean my LSD is broken?thanks

If you have ABS, you probably have the vlsd.

Look at your VLSD. If there is an orange sticker on it that says "Viscous LSD", bingo.

My car did not come with ABS, and where would the range sticker be located on the case, top, bottom, left or right side?? Plus I doubt that the sticker would even be on there anymore, but if i dont have LSD, will both my wheels spin at the same time or does only one wheel spin with an open diff?? And if anyone knows where i can get an OBD1 connector with the wiring harness(its really small) that connects to the ecu so i can plug in a scanner that would be great, i dont have the diagnostic port to plug one in. thanks for all the help.

One wheel spinning means you have an open differential, or a broken VLSD, in which case, you might as well have an open differental. Welcome to the club. LOL.

BTW, where in Simi Valley are you?

VLSD was NOT an "line item" option on the S14 SE...it came ONLY as a package with ABS.

For a base car, you could order it...but not on an SE.

..so no ABS, no VLSD for you.

Off LA Ave, between First and Erringer. What color is your S14?

Well, even with an open differential, once you get the tires spinning fast enough, both will lock up. A lot of people have been able to drift on open differentials, though it's not exactly preferable. The biggest disadvantage (IMHO) in using an open differential is the violent snap you get out of a drift when one wheel suddenly starts gripping.

You may have had a VLSD for those three years. There's no reason someone who knew what they were doing couldn't have swapped one in before you got your hands on the car... still, as it stands, you have what's functioning like an open differential.

BTW, I can get you a J30 VLSD pretty cheap. E-mail me if you're interested. [email protected]. Later.
