I thought it would be a good idea for everyone to post their pro's and cons with this type of differential in one place, since I couldn't find an actual "review" thread for vlsd's. But anyway, I just put mine in today and personally love it. It basically feels like an open diff (no wheel dragging) until you want it to be a LSD. I got mine with axles for about 110 bucks and it was pretty easy to install. I used the one from a 93 J30 and just used the J30 axles, a one piece drive shaft, some big*** washers, and longer front mounting bolts (M12 1.25 pitch 80mm long). Other than that, all you have to do is swap the rear cover from the s13 open diff to the vlsd. I did some donuts with it and it was a lot easier and a lot more fun, can't wait to try some hard launches and wet weather

Id have to say i loved mine when i had my s14. HUGE difference coming from open diff. A lot of people love to hate on it but those are usually the people who think the welded diff is amazing

On my s13 i plan on putting in the j30 vlsd since i kept it, however i will be taking it apart and shimming it for an even tighter feel

i love my stock vlsd. i don't track my car so it suits me just fine. the only other rear end i'd even consider is an s15 hlsd.

Is there a thread somewhere telling how to shim the diff? I've heard of people doing it but never seen a "how-to."

BTW for everyone thinking about doing the swap, I got to mess around some in the rain today and the grip was PHENOMINALLY better than the open diff, used to i would spin until I let off the throttle almost completely. Now I just let off a little and it only spins for a second or so and I'm gripping, this is with maybe 180 whp and Yokohama S.Drives. This is definately one of the best investments I've made so far.

the vlsd is a great upgrade from open diff but if you want to get into competitive drifting you'd want at least a 1.5way. The vlsd is 1 way so when you let off the throttle to transition you drift from right to left of vise versa, it acts like an open diff on decel =/

when my vlsd was still fresh i could drift circles and do figure 8's no problem, now it's all worn out and acts like an open so it's hard to kick the a** end out for a while.

If you want to shim your VLSD:http://biggamehit.teammnr.com/

Go there and scroll to the bottom to "VLSD Shimming"

Basically it's, remove the diff from the case, remove the crown gear, split the LSD in half and replace the shim. Then put everything back together.

I recently went with a welded rear diff mainly because of the cost factor. I had an extra open diff lying around to i figured if the welded one went out i could just swap them back. Ive had many arguements on this since im so pro welded and heres what it comes down to:

DD use= lsdTrack use and limited street driving= welded or if you got the cash 1.5 way or even a 2 way which is welded pretty much.

Although i dont notice the welded rear diff unless its really sharp corners or at low speeds like turning it out of the garage.

*Edit* just read through all the info posted and there is some good stuff

welded is only for drift and drag though, if you're gonna do time attack it's gonna slow you down if now make you crash lol

sure ill be guilty of a thread jack yet again. nah cincinnati is like it own little state. If he doesnt live here i wouldnt know him. Id like to see another kouki around here but most of the 240s around here are all rust buckets cause of the salt. Thats why i had to go to knoxville to get mine.

There is a j30 diff on ebay for like 20 bucks with no reserve. Someone should be able to get that fairly cheap by the time bidding ends. 80 bucks shipping so be careful

Hey man, did you already have the 1-pc driveshaft, or did you have it made after getting the VLSD installed?

I just bought a j30 vlsd, but I'm worried that it may not have any slack for installation with my 1-pc driveshaft.
