I just put the R32 rear differential VLSD on my 95 240sx and I think the pinion gear is bad? Anyone have a one installed? Encountered a problem like this

What happens is the front of the differential where it the driveshaft connects puts out a LOT of noise and gets worse when I go into a higher gear.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Bearing noise? What does it sound like?

constant chattering? constant rolling/grinding sound?

if it makes loud cluncks around corners u dont need it i will trade u for a super duper vlsd with no noise

I would classify it as a rolling, grinding sound

Not true. The viscous unit may be the same, but the pumpkins and output shaft bolt patterns definitely are not.

And yes, some of the S14's had VLSD. Does your have an ABS sensor on it? If so, it might be causing the grinding.

How sure are you its the rear end? Jack it up and run it through the gears. Sound travels and can telescope from even the motor. I'd say get a stethascope and pinpoint EXACTLY where it is.-Alex

I have a R32 LSD or at least the sticker just says LSD and it makes a CRAZY whineing sound from about 2500 rpm to 4500 only way to get rid of it is to drive 75 all the time, it sounds like its comming from the transmission but its the rear end. Does it seem to bind up and grind/thump when your making sharp turns at low speed? it did you check the fluid?

I didnt say anything about the axles or pumpkin. I know there different. I had to change my axles with my vlsd.

But yes all the internals are the same and yes s14's did have vlsd

Yeah, whatever. Be specific. People use this information to buy expensive parts. Is an S14 the "same" as an Altima because they have the same engine?

FYI: final drive ratios:S13/S14: 4.083R32 Gts-t: 4.30R32 GT-R: 4.111J30: 3.92Z32 turbo: 3.692Z32 N/A: 4.083

we used a stethescope and you can definately tell that the noise is coming from the front of the differential, where it meets the drive shaft. Drained and put new oil in it before we installed it.

The main reason I wanted to use this differential was for the gear but I dont think im going to use it.

If I can pinpoint the problem anyone intrested in buying/trading?

it was an option if the car has ABS. its rare but some S14's do have a VLSD

i would pull the case apart and do a backlash check on the unit, sounds like the teeth arent meshing properly, that can lead to catastrophic failure if you arent carefull.

Great news-=--I did all tht nosense for nothing.. =( My 240 has LSD and the gear ratio isnt that much of a difference, so I put my old one back on, and getting ready to open up the r32
