I'll be putting in my VLSD next weekend and I was wondering what kind of fluid everyone is running, what you would recomend, and what you think about it. I used red-line in my transmission and was very happy with the results. A friend told me that I should just use the OEM specified weight and use this additive that ford makes, supposed to be really good suff. Anything you could give me would be great.

are you wanting to know what gear oil to put in the rear end or what VSLD fluid to use for the VSLD? The VSLD is a sealed unit. If fluid is getting in, fluid is also getting old. So your VSLD is now an OPEN diff (mine is heading that way, I think).

For the rear end I've used mobil, and penzoil. Penzoil is my favorite so far (not as loud). The ford stuff is supposed to be good, but it's not a VSLD fluid, I don't think. It's a gear oil. I think.

that ford additive is a friction modifier for clutch- pack type differentials... so u don't need it.

just a good brand name 80W90 or a step above (synthetic)would suffice.

No, I bought a VLSD and since I've got it out I was planning on changing the fluid, no idea what condition the old fluid is in, so better safe than sorry you know? Would the redline be overkill?

If you are changing the GEAR OIL, just get some penzoil or something. Change it every other time you change your oil (no rhymn or reason, just cause I said...hehe)

could one of you guys explain to me real quick the difference between a rear end and the diff? i`m assuming that the rear end is the place where the gears are, and it`s somewhere in front of the diff, between it and the driveshaft. also, i`ve got some redline fluid iWas gonna use in the diff (stock r200) is it possible to change the "rear end" oil also?

rear end \ rear differential \ pumpkin are all the same thing.

It takes the input shaft and splits it two the drive axles.

go to howstuffworks.com and you'll understand it.

IIRC the stock VSLD is a seal unit. You can only change the gear oil.

T, that's a bit on the redundant side... unless you're auto-Xing almost every week...

normal conditions ~30,ooo miles/ every 2 years along w/ my coolant flushes

I do it annually recently though--both trans & differential-- since my 89 is starting to get older...i want fresher fluids pumpin thru her :P

i picked up a j30 vlsd from a junk yard and i know i have to swap the rear cover, not only for the holes but cuz they poked a whole in it to drain the fluid. but my question is by poking the whole in the cover it doesnt allow the vlsd fluid torun out just the gear oil right?? so i should be good and not have to buy any VLSD fluids?
