Am I correct in assuming that you need to drop the exhuast near the diff to get to the refill plug on the 240's vlsd, I was under the car yesterday and from what I can see I don't have much of a choice, either that or see if an extention and u-joint on the ratchet will work. Any advice would be appreciated.

And would the correct tools include a ratchet extension and u-joint?

yep a short 1/2 in extension on a 1/2 in rachet, just manuver around and eventually you'll get it in there.
