I think this has probably been covered before, but search turned up wayyyy too many threads for me to check them all.

I'm going to pick up a JDM VLSD from an S13 Silvia tomorrow. It was a 5 bolt output configuration, but they output flanges were swapped with the stock, open differential 6 bolt out flanges for a complete bolt on affair.

How do I tell (with the diff out of the car) if it is actually a VLSD or just a regular open diff?

TIA.

did the discussion about the presence cooling fins prove to be worth anything, i dont remember if it was deemed truthful or not.

There is a way to tell. I wish I could remember exactly which diff did what. I believe the open diff if spun, the wheels will spin in oposite directions. With an LSD they will both spin in the same direction. Someone please check me on this.
