I understand that differences exist between the two motor's, but are the bellhousings the same. I suppose the more important question is: can I bolt a 6 speed from the M-Sport into my 1994 Q?

I do not know the answer to your question, but I would be very surprised if the M45 transmission fits a 1994 Q! The M transmission (well, at least the 2003 one) is a new design and has been used (in five speed versions) on the newer generation Q, current G, and 2003 M - although there are probably some slight differences in the gearing and the TCU. I do not know if it was re-designed for the 2006 M, or simply added a new gear for the six speeds.

Hopefully, someone else can chime in here with the accurate info!

Welcome to NICO anyway!!

BTW your Q is a VH45DE

I'm quite sure the trannies fit different and you'll be needing modifications to make it fit -- if it's even possible to make it fit.

What 6 speed? For a manual adapter housing, search for the T56 thread.

There is no VQ45DE, of course, but the VQ and VK are largely based on the same engineering design principles.

The VH is a whole different animal.

thanks, guys. I had it wrong. Yeah, I am curious about the 6-speed manual tranny. Just looking at options for a car that I love, with a tranny that I hate. If I could put a manual in the Q, it would be a helluva lot more fun.

I understand the question better now!

There is no six-speed manual in the M35 or M45, so that would not be an option. Others have thought about this for the first-gen Q45 ... but like maxnix said, we do not know of any actual successful effort yet!

You'd probably be looking at a 6 speed G35 or Z tranny. However I'm quite sure the whole project (6 speed) wouldn't be very cost effective. You'd be better off with a 5 speed z32 tranny. Like maxnix said, search through for T56 threads.

why would you put a T56 on there (POS) when a Z32 tranny is cheap and fairly doable?

Either way a 5 speed auto would be pretty cool in the Q, but it probably wouldnt be worht the work... Easier to get the 4.08 to make better use of those 4 measly gears we get....

I thought the M45 sport had a manual 6 speed tranny.

Unfortunately, no! That would have been absolutely awesome!

It is an automatic. A darn fine, "read-my-mind" automatic though! With rev blips at just the right moment, etc.

Wow, you are right. I re-read the C&D review. I had the impression it was a manual tranny. Okay, ignore me.
