So I've been noticing the JDM vk45de on ebay for a while now they are very cheap often under $1000 shipped. I can't help but notice I can bolt my G37 6 speed right up and they use the older style harness (pre 2003) and cable throttle body.

Now I'm very fabrication savvy but I'm wiring retarded I can follow what someone else does in pictures and explanation but I'm not going to figure out anything on my own.

I have a vq35hr in my garage with everything but the converted harness so if I have to sell my kidney to have Z fever tune an ECU and rework the harness like I do with the vq I'll probably just finish out the vq swap

But if its a fairly simple rework like doing an RB or SR swap it seems like a no brainier to go with the VK since it has more power and fits under the hood.

So what's your question?

I guess I just don't know how hard it is to make an early JDM vk45de run with a Nissan pre2003 harness and ecu

Ah, gotcha.
Some of the sensors and connections could be a bit different, but if you can figure out how to connect them (or swap the sensors out for originals), I would think it should at least run.

Clarify this for me.

You see the VK45de, you admire the VK
- I got that part
You have a G37 6 speed manual and believe that physically it will bolt right onto the VK.
- I think I got that too
You are curious to know if the VK can be made to run with a pre-2003 Nissan harness & ECU
  • OK, what Nissan harness and ECU are you referencing exactly?
  • I believe it has to be a V8 at least so that the ECU even knows to look for 2 other cylinders (Not much experience personally)
  • Also, I have seen info that suggests for a fact the 06+ ECMs are tunable using UpRev. The pre 06+ ones were considered unlockable, but UpRev has been used on the FX45 older style ECUs. No positive info on the 03/04 M45 or the Q45s.
  • The VK45de was first used in the States for the 2002 Q45, and for the M45 it started in 2003. The plugs themselves on the engine are directly swappable all the way from a 2002 Q45 to a 2010 M45; the difference is at the ECU and transmission, and the hydraulic fan solenoid.
This might not answer your question directly, but it might offer some info on the USDM VK45DEs: v8-engine-replacement-options-do-the-03 ... 19905.html

I was under the assumption that the harness and ECU were also from a VK... but now that I look back, I'm wondering as well.

Pre-2006 VK45DE ECUs are now tunable on UpRev

so you can reflash the 02 Q45 ecu's now? This might make the swap more attractive.

Yup, 02 Q45 should be good to go.

The swaps from eBay (typically) come with harness and ECU - for all intents and purposes it thinks it's still an Infiniti

Yup, 02 Q45 should be good to go.
They told me it wasn't possible for my 02 and refunded me. They said the 04 and newer ecus can be flashed however due to more memory available. (i guess their mod sits in memory)

Now my question is, can I buy a 04 ecu and get it flashed to my key and will it run my 02? I don't know if the 04s went to electrical fan and if it so, what happens to the hydromechanical fan?

Per UpRev, my ECU, which I was TOLD was from a 2006, is not tunable due to the smaller memory space issue.

Part number shows to be from a 2006 Nissan Cima
