hey, i was replacing a valve cover gasket on a 350z today and i noticed something. once you have the plenum off, there is lots of room everywhere. there is easily room for two more cylinders on the back of the darn thing. the tough part would be squeezing a 90 degree v8 into that engine bay. still there is room on either side to fit it i think. future plans for the z when toyota comes out with their v8 supra? maybe. possible swap? i think so. anyone have an idea? :ylsuper

its VQ45DE

and I think its very possible, you need to see the length on the V-8 and then see if it fits, all the rest is fabrication

VH45de from 90-96VH41de from 97-01VK45de from 02+

There has been VH45de swaps into Z32s before. If the Z33 has more space I dont see why not. I would think that a turbo VQ35 would be cheaper though...

yeah, turbo would be cheaper. i am just trying to think of what may be nissans plan for the 350z in the near future. toyota is rumored to have a supra replacement coming out soon. it is supposed to be offered with a v6 and a v8. also in order to keep the skyline thing going strong there will need to be a more powerfull option for a gtr.

also, length is not the real concern. i think width is going to be the only prob.

I'm wondering if the space was there for an inline 6 and nissan just pussied out? Could have been nice..

well you know the fm platform is the same as the new breed of skyline. in early devolpment nissan was talking a tuned v8 or turbo six. I havent read new articles

Exactly what I thought. But I can't tell if it's photochopped or not because the tower bar looks kind of funky over the engine cover and plenum. On the other hand it's too detailed everywhere else...

i think its a photochop, the breather hose that connects to the stock plenum is just disappearing under the cover. i dont the the 5.6 has a hose in that same location. looks like a chop to me.

yeah, thats photochopped. I did it to see what it would look like. I think I did it for someone on another board.. It would actually be to big to fit..Count how many intake runners there are; 7. SHould be 8.It would be nice to have a V8 in a Z though.

PEACE

All RWD Nissans have suprisingly similar engine bay dimensions. I'm guessing if a VG will drop into an S13, then maybe the VK45DE from the FX45 might slip into a Z33 relatively painlessly. I'm sure some exhaust fabrication might be required, and maybe some engine mounts to move the engine around, but I don't see why it's not possible.

I'd also like to compliment you on your photochop. It's actually extremely clean and had me fooled for a while until someone pointed out that it "might" be PS'd.

Hey everyone! how's it going? Yes, I am a newbie, but I don't want you do disregard this information as mere ramblings of a lunatic =)

I'm 99% sure that the VH45 engine WILL fit into a Z33. My rasoning is based on the fact that I have seen that exact motor stuffed into the cramped confines of the Z32 chassis (with a little persuasion). Comparing the VG30 and VQ35, the VQ is wider, taller, and probably longer. This leads me to believe that the width of the VH won't be a problem at all. Judging from these facts, with some fabrication (much like the TT swap into the NA 300z chassis), it is possible to coplete this transplant. Just remenber that it's not going to be as easy as a honda swap or anything =)

My question is: Why you would want to do this swap? Sure it'll give it more low end torque, initially. But if you're going to spend that much money, why not just sleeve the block, stroke it, and put a couple of turbos on there. The bottom line is that $ for $, horse power to horse power, you're gonna come up ahead on turbocharging the VQ. It's going to be more powerful and the cost effective way to go.

hope i didn't leave anything out. . .

Would the VK's be a lot wider than a VG30DETT? Millen was able to squeeze a GS430's V8 in a IS300.
