I installed the VH45 rods and pistons into the Vk45 block. They fit and clear perfectly, and will increase the compression.

These pictures represent the Vh45 pistons in the VK45 block at TDC. As you can see, the pistons are right at deck height. Also note that non of the VH45 pistons have rings in them to speed up the comparison.

These pics are of the factory VK45 pistons that I have yet to remove from the block. They are at TDC and you can see that they are domed. The outer part of the pistons are lower than the deck by about 1 millimeter or so.

It's hard to tell, but the VK45 rods are on the left, the VH45 rod on the right.

These are both the VH45 rods installed. Fits perfectly, and you can see that the pistons clears the crank counterweights.

VK45 Piston clearance from the crankshaft.

Both VH45 rods at the front of the block.

VK45 Main bearing cap, two of the smaller bolts loosened. You can see these motors also have the support bolt on the outside of the block.

From this comparison, I believe that you can do a cheap upgrade on the Vk45 just by changing to the VH45 rods and pistons. The VK45 is rated at the 10.5:1 compression ratio while the VH45 is rated at 10.2:1. Seeing how the design of the VH45 piston is, I am certain the compression ratio would increase. I think that the VK45 has smaller combustion chamber on the head.

I edited your post so the picture would show up.

Anyway, it looks like they fit almost perfect?

From your earlier pics it would appear that this would raise the compression in a VK a little, yes? or am I missing something.

I recall someone saying the VK is open deck. These photos clearly show it's not, though the holes to the water galleries are a lot bigger and there is less overall material thickness.

I wonder if the water holes in the headgaskets are just as small as on a VH.

I added all the pics and I do agree with you that it would increase the compression.

MORE PICS

If you want to snap a million pics I can host and post them very rapidly. Just a thought, doesnt make any difference.

Im not sure if I missed something somewhere, but do you have a VH45 block to compare it to? So far I think im only seing a VK block...

Does anyone have any pics of the bottom end of a VH45?

This is a brilliant comparison and I will definitely put this info on VH45de.com

I nearly bought a VH45 just to do a side by side comparison, but the cost was a bit more than what I can currently afford with 3+ projects on my hands. Having more than a few members taken the VH45 apart, I figured that my pics plus theirs would be good enough. Anyone have a VH45 that they can donate or give me for real cheap ?

ouch, its hard to tell from the size of the pic, but it looks like that #2 rod's got a nice spin on it.

I can go out tomorrow and get pictures of the bottom end of my extra vh45 shortblock, it's still all together. From just looking at pics, it looks pretty much identical to the vk45 ones in these pics.

I have a vh45 headgasket in my hand, and everything is pretty much in the same place except for that part on the inside of each bank at the front of the block where the port gets real big. Does anyone have any pictures of the deck of a vk45 head?

#2 rod is fine, it's #5 that's gone

That's all that remains for the #5 rod bearings.

This is the first post on the VH45/VK45 piston and rod comparison. zerothread/268439

I'll take pics of the head tomorrow.

yeah, thats just semantics.. on a v8 crank, alot of people call the 2nd shared journal "#2 rod" because there are actually only four rod journals on a v8 crank.

and it looks like we now know who your fav p0rn star is..

Yeah, you got me there. .... Wouldn't it be the 3rd rod journal as it's the #5 rod that got wasted?

PICS HERE (for now):http://www.q45.org/uploads/VK45%20block/

I'm manually moving files to the new gallery because I screwed up the upgrade.
