This is actually what I would consider the ideal scenario, and also strongly recommend as well. Any hotel along route 78 or 22 (Edgewater area) should have easy access to Penn Station NY, Hoboken NJ, Secaucus NJ, or Penn Station Newark NJ stations. There are light rail/PATH trains that connect the NJ stations to Manhattan and a few direct lines from each that transfer through to Penn NY. There is no NJ train line that runs directly into Grand Central unfortunately, only to Penn Station NY. As mentioned you can take the ferrry from Hoboken or Weehawken NJ to 3 different NY docks if I remember correctly. And of course the bus is always an option. The amount of mass transit available is a little overwhelming.

If/when you start planning this trip get in touch with me, I'll help best I can. Been here 29 years so Im quite familiar with the area.

EDIT: Sorry, Edgewater is not near routes 78 and 22, I was thinking of Bridgewater.

There's a decent hotel in Brooklyn that I always stay at that's off the R and N line, it's in Sunset Park. http://www.daysinn.com/hotels/new-york/ ... &wid=local

I remember the rates being reasonable, and since you're already in the city, it wasn't too bad to get to Manhattan.

Guys, not every hotel in NY is $1500 per night. There are many reasonably priced ones in the city, just need to know where they are. Though staying at one of the really pricey rooms at one of the landmark hotels is uber cool. My wife and I did an escape weekend at the St.Regis on the concierge level (included a butler) several years ago when my wife's boss (then owner of the company) had a last minute change of plans and offered his suite to us with instructions to expense it. All I can say is, WOW.

Well I wasn't implying that at all. But average is over $200, and the place i mentioned was well under that, and you could park in the street out front without too much of a problem.

not true. the majority of american's who came here on boat never saw a damned thing from the bellies of those wooden cesspools. and now we know why i had no desire to go visit. also, as far as the statue, make sure you go on a day where 18 schools aren't having a field trip there simultaneously. it's like being in line for the newest roller coaster at disney. 4 hours wasted, climbing stairs very slowly, only to spend 1 minute looking out of the crown (when i went, the arm was closed). gay.

f*** that money hungry franchise with their ridiculously over-priced tickets and concessions. the all-american past-time is dead, and the yankees killed it.

The statue is no longer open to the public. You can only walk around it now. Ellis island is cool though.

Ellis Island is a neat place to visit IF you had relatives that passed thru there or are into geneology. I had several relatives pass thru the island, with one amusing error. My great aunt, whose last name was "Fedder" evidently was processed by a Brooklynite, because when she gave him her last name, he wrote down "Feather". :yesnod

Very true about the Statue of Liberty. Liberty island accessible by Ferry from both NJ and NY, so it can get very crowded, for lines for buying tickets (if you didn't buy ahead), riding the elevator if you don't feel like walking up steps, and waiting to get back onto the Ferry to leave. The torch is no longer open (I had been up there a couple times as a child- awesome), I think the crown might also be closed for renovation. By the time you visit, it, I would think it'll be open. When I last took my son there (a couple weeks before "9/11")they only allowed one tour group per day to go to the crown (and it was early in the morning). We passed. As info, The view of NYC from just the base is great.

Yankee stadium is actually brand new, and like Tita noted: very pricey. It;s no longer historic. I haven't been to the new Yankee stadium yet (Mets fan), but the old one was nice. But last time I was at Yankee stadium, Mickey Mantle was the centerfielder. I agree nothing beats Fenway Park especially when the Yankees are in town, but the best two series to be at Yankee stadium are when Boston or the Mets visit (Mets have played the Yanks every year since interleague play started).

^Citi Field is a lot nicer than the New Yankee Stadium IMO. Panoramic view is awesome.
