I have an open differential in my 240sx. I was wondering if a limited slip differential would help improve traction during icy and snowy conditions. I know that the viscous material heats up from the wheel losing traction and locks the two to help improve traction but would it take too long to engage. The last few winters were kinda hard to deal with, it was fun but sometimes annoying and of course dangerous. Plus i would like in case of emergencies that someone else in my family can drive that darn car

actually, LSD is worse for cornering in the snow I have found...makes your *** end slide out a lot easier.

thanks for the reply. Was hoping it would help. I guess i have to stick to short shifting and fighting the drifting for now.

The only thing that the VLSD will do in ice and snow, is make your take off easier. I can get my car rolling is almost anything.. but handling is aweful with or without it. It really does nothing to help maintain straight tracking.... downshifting is the only way to slow down or stop.. I suppose it might help in that reagrd as well, but not very much.. I hate driving my 240 is bad weather. I have a 4X4 to take care of that little problem.

I noticed cars with any decent amount of power are torture in the snow or rain. My truck was all slow and automatic so it was easy. I drove my friends Trans Am in the rain, argg, it was so hard to get the tires not to spin. My truck was way easy, it was all slow. I imagine my 240 will be somewhere in the middle. I think LSD would make it harder in the rain or snow because you'll slide easier (from side to side) and when you slide in those conditions it's not easy to stop.

thank u guys so much for ur response. I am able to deal with the handling the car while moving in the snow. It was the acceleration i was having problems with. no matter how little gas i give it or how soon i upshift the right tire would always spin in place causing the car to fishtail a little. i dont mind the fishtail i am just worried about getting stuck. The one thing that bothers me the most is gettting stuck in parking spots where the car is surrounded by snow or ice, even if i manage to get one wheel on solid ground with good traction the power will only go to the wheel thats slipping.
