Some sad news for fans of VIRginia International Raceway (VIR). I just heard the old giant Oak Tree that shaded the famous "oak tree" hairpin turn fell down earlier today. Word is it broke near the base and collapsed. No injuries or track damage, but it was one of the track's more famous and photographed landmarks.

I will not get SAPpy with sentimentality, or Pine away about the old tree. Management is STUMPed as to the cause, but I'm sure they'll SPRUCE up the area soon.

Ah, good old puns. Tree or four aren't enough though, wood you care to elaborate?

Such a pity for an iconic landmark to take its leaf of the course. It will surely be missed, but I hope VIR can branch out and find a suitable retirement for the old girl.

My suggestion was to make the tree into first place awards for vintage races.

That would really be an awesome trophy set. I think it would mean more than a regular metal trophy.

That last one was awful.

Also, how does a tree just "fall over"? I hope it wasn't too rotted, that would make trophys sort of hard to make out of it...

Good question. I don't know, but it was an old tree. The article failed to mention the ROOT of the problem.

Did they get any of the crazy weather that southern CT got the other day? Like tornados and stuff?
