Hi, ok before i start, i just want to say that this is just a question i have been asking myself recently. And I live in CA, United States...thanks for your time (and sorry for the wall of text)

I have also already asked this on an Evo forum but i need opinions from both sides so i can get the least biased choice.

Hey guys whats up? I have suddenly had a little change of heart as ive been doing more research and finding new things out (new to me). Let me begin by saying I am 20 years old, and have been saving up for a while to buy a 2006 WW Mitsubishi Evo MR. I almost have enough for it since the one i found has a salvage title due to theft and needs the transmission replaced.

But i started out as a Nissan fanboy and was into skylines from the start. Well after doing some snooping, i found a company that can get me a 1972 Skyline from japan in my budget of $15,000 and then a couple more thousand for the other stuff required to get it to my front door.

So my question is, to the ones of you that have a Evo and have thought about cars that you would get if you had the money, would any of you prefer a '72 skyline to an Evo.

I am thinking of getting the skyline to work on and getting a Chevy Tahoe for daily driving....

Whats your guy's thoughts?

My posts in the thread i listed above are : 1,22,36,38,41

If you read anything from my evo post please read my posts, I explain what the skyline will be used for and many other questions/points that have been brought up..... The only thing that i am concerned about is the up keep. For those of you who know or have one how bad would it honestly be.

Dude, 15k for a 1972 and here to the states. I realize you're new to this but a 72 from Japan...for 15k..... not even in the realm of remotely being possible. Those cars fetch a premium in Japan. I would stay away to whom ever your talking to. Look through the posts here and you can get to Tyndago's web page and search for information

Hi, thanks for the info and the gtr forum. But i forgot to mention im talking about just a plain skyline, not a gt-r and i don't expect it to be in great condition, just decent. this is directly from the person i emailed... "You can find a car in that price range. That is at the lower end of the driver scale of those cars, but still a solid enough car." And i was just wondering what your opinions are because if i do decide to go down the skyline path, i will be waiting at least 1 full year before i place an order to import one. I will have roughly $25,000 if not more. Any more info you can provide me with would be greatly appreciated...thanks again.

Just an example. They can be found for a little less and a lot more, but I would say this a middle range car. Notice, it is NOT a GT-R, but a L-power car.

At today's yen rate that would be $37,000.00.

The bottom end of the Hakosuka line might be at that price, if you're lucky.

The body lines on the bottom end are slightly diffent. The base engines are, if I remember right, 4 cylinders. Those aren't even that sought after here.

Like TMS posted above, just a mid level Hakosuka with an L series, is going to be a serious chunk of change. I'd suggest looking though Goo Net's English pages here and put in the parameters you're looking for to just get a basic idea of what you're going to be in store for.

Then go to www.xe.com for yen to dollar conversions.

I respect that you are saving your coin for a car you'd love to have. But, my only thing is that you need to be aware of what these cars are actually going for. And don't just take the words of some importer or business that probably doesn't have any kind of good reputation.

Check out Feast Japan. I know the guy who runs the place (not very well, but I do speak to him now and again over here) and I haven't heard of any dissatisfied customers from his company. There are a few other well known Gaijins here in Japan that have export business, but I don't know them at all.

Do you research for a very long time before you drop one nickle on a car.

Well if you have an extra car like you said there is and the budget to boot, I say get the classic! What Skyline '72 are we talking about here? Is that a GT-R aka "Hakosuka?!

at 20 years old, why do you want to get in the vintage car game? especially one that is hard to get and even harder to source OEM parts for (assuming you are looking to keep it original). for that kind of money you might as well buy a vintage ferrari 308, initial cost is the same, and the up keep will be about the same.

an R32 would be much easier to get and work on, not to mention cheaper, and once they hit the 25 year mark they will be real easy to get in the US, wait and see.

of course your best option may be to just invest that 25 grand for a few years, maybe go to school and get a degree in the mean time, then after you graduate cash that investment out and find yourself a nice R35 GTR.

Since you mentioned an older Skyline, I suggest you contact JDM Legends. (www.jdmlegends.com) I've been talking with one of the guys who works there, who himself drives a '72 Skyline 2000GT sedan. Contact them, and they can help you out.
