So freaking crazy. I wonder what the death toll for racing was back then.

They flew of to safety! Just gotta dodge the car afterward and you're in the clear.

I like that they had to run to the car in the beginning of the race

The size of the balls on the guys must be enormous...No tops, no seat belts, and racing in the rain....that's either fearless-ness or just plain crazy.

I don't know how many people died in this video, but I count at least one....there's no way that dude walked away from the fire

The way they raced back then is crazy as hell. I cant imagine being on a track without a helmet now, and that's in an inclosed car. lol crazy!!!

Old open-wheeled gran prix cars were crazy.

Come to the Jefferson 500, Turkey Run, or your own local vintage race to see stuff like this on-track.

Why didn't they have ROLL BARS back then?

I suppose the for same reason they didn't have seatbelts. No one thought of them.
Those are actually the cars I would love to drive. I consider driving one of those old behemouths well with skinny tires, non-synchro manual transmissions out in the open more thrilling than a modern technogical terror. Of course, the modern car is considerably faster, but I feel more disconnected from the modern car and feel like I'm missing out more on part of the "art" of driving. Maybe it's just me.
