I normally use to get a tiny puff of blue smoke on start up but now it seems to be a lot more smoke during start up.Heres a video showing how much smoke comes out.

How long does your car sit on those blue smoke start ups? How many miles? Mine only does it if it sits for like two days. Im getting a oil consumption test done now. I really think these cars need a oil separator on them to keep the oil out of the intake. Dealer told me its the oil all in the bottom of the pan when it sits for 48 hrs or more. If thats the case it would need a oil accumulator to prime the engine on start up. You need to take that video to your dealer.

The car sits overnight for less than 12 hours and it will smoke up like that. I am currently on my first consumption test. After my 1000 miles i will be showing this video to them. Will be recording a few more. lol

TigerClaws:

I may be wrong, but when a car emits blueish white smoke means it's the beginning of an oil leak internally. I haven't read anywhere on the forum that it's from a car sitting for more than 12 hours.

I travel from time to time and my would sit for weeks in the garage, and no blue smoke.

If its blue smoke like that its just as I suspect. Oil is being recycled through the intake. High compression engines are know for this hint the separator is needed to keep the oil out of the intake and on top of the piston. Domestic engines and builders know of this and put separators in line with the PCV system and acumulators for dry starts. Imports are getting into V8s and dont know of these symptoms I assume because Ive read reviews of oil problems on emission V8s. With the power and TQ of these engines with such high compression with low emissions you see the oil consumption being sucked through the intake being the problem???? This only makes sense to me because Ive seen it with high compression V8s and separators and accumulators solving the problems with oil consumption. Im new to Imports but the oil has to go some place. I dont see these engines just burning oil. Talk to me....

So you're saying that htat the maker s of import engines haven't taken this into consideration when designing V-8 engines? I'm serious with this question.

As far as I know....I've never seen an oil separator on any stock engine weather it's small displacement or large displacement. I think he's refering to the aftermarket.

GM uses them and BMW. Dont know why Nissan doesnt. But I notice smoke again today and oil is getting low.

The older VH 4.5 used wire brushes inserted in PCV lines to reduce plenum oil. Haven't checked the VK engine yet.The usual problem is low ring tension and deceleration ring flutter caused by the bump up in power redesign vs older 90-96.Remember 1997 - 2001 had no 4.5 liter engine.

Q45 tech....by that description, would it be a reasonable test to pinch off the PCV line or better yet dump it into a recepticle to see if there's a change?

Even if it causes a CEL for a little while, I'd be more at ease knowing that's it over a lifter or valve seal issue.

For what it's worth though, i understood it was the lower piston ring setup also....but though it was resolved when the 2nd gen came out with a little less power. Maybe not?

So if your engine is smoking it needs replacing from this statement?

He probably meant to indicate that low ring tension is the reason....not a problem.

I'm not sure about the deceleration ring flutter description though...not certain what exactly that is.
