I've had an HP 1400 series for a little over a year now. Before I brought it home I had a video card and power supply upgrade done. The first video card visibly broke within a few months. I had no signal to my monitor and looked inside to find the fan on the card hanging by a thread--Fried.So I went and got a NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS and put it in, and it is what I'm using now. But not long after having it I shut the comp. down for the night to have no video the next day. I fooled around with it, then I simply pulled it out and looked it over, put it back in and it worked again. I was afraid to shut the comp. down for awhile! But eventually I did and it ran fine until today. I had the same thing happen again. I took it out, after un-hooking everything, (again) and put it back in and it's working! Any ideas as to what's going on here?

SWAG: is your power supply size adequate for the higher performance video cards? I know you mentioned an upgrade to it, but ... never hurts to check.

An adequate power supply has got to be one of the most overlooked parts. I need a new one very soon as I'm sure I'm pushing the limits on mine.

SWAG??

The card requires 300W min. The power supply is 430W.I keep thinking maybe the socket on the board the card plugs into isn't connecting as well as it should to either the card or the board?

IIRC, SWAG stands for a Scientific Wild A$$ Guess

It does sound like the card might not be getting enough power.

OK, if the power supply is adeguate what would be keeping it from getting enough power?

Possibilities (all are still SWAG's in this case! )

1. Well, not all power supplies meet rated power. That is one issue. You have to get a reliable manufacturer to do that.

2. Sometimes, to get high current in the +5 and +12 volt lines, they use what are called multiple "rails". Sometimes, these are insufficient for a given load (like a graphics card).

3. Yes, the total supply may be higher than you need, but the specific current on the voltage line to the card may be too low.

Most importantly, you just said that the card needs 300W and you are running a 430W supply. Yes, the mftr probably is taking into account a "typical" system, but you may simply need more than that, if you have other stuff in the system.

I would strongly suggest trying a good 600W to 650W supply and see if that cures your problem - these will run between $60 - $85 or so.

Thank you for the detailed SWAG'sI'm not sure what I'm going to do. Kinda like a car - hate to throw stuff at it and come to find out it's still not fixed...But thanks again,TC
