Vibration in rear at highway speeds, comes and goes?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Problem... I had warped rotors, the dealer re-cut them and put some newer updated backing plates under warranty. Brakes are fine again. Now I get a vibration in the right rear of the vehicle, only once you hit highway speeds, faster than 55mph. It doesn't happen all the time, sometimes it takes 5 minutes or longer at that speed, sometimes it doesn't happen. Dealer had the car again last week for 5 business days, rechecked all the brakes, etc and said the 4 tires were out of balance, they tried to make me pay for it, I refused, so the manager, (very nice) covered it. I went to another Infiniti dealer and took the mechanic on a test ride for nearly 25 minutes at highway speeds and of course it drove fine.. Then this morning it did it again. My EX still does this vibration from time to time. Very annoying. Any suggestions? The tire looks fine. Wondering if it's the tire?

What brand of Tires do you have?

How many Miles/Kilometers have elapsed between the Brake Job and the discovery of the vibration?

On my Truck, I also had a vibration that no one could figure out.

After several visits to the Dealer and no satisfaction, I myself, swapped out one Tire at a time with my Spare and then went for a short high-speed drive... until the Vibration at the certain speed disappeared.

It was a pain in the a$$, but I figured out the problem, myself.

I had a separated Belt.

Goodyear Wranglers... I have never bought Goodyears and never will. The Goodyears were OEM on my Truck and were garbage before they wore out. It was a shame, they still had half their life left.

Note... my Spare was a full-size Spare.

Good luck...

The Vibration started right after the they cut the rotors and put the newer bigger backing plates on. It was fine until that. The dealer then had the EX for 5 business days. They couldn't find it (vibration) (they put 20 miles on the car) I told them to take it on the highway, since they are on side streets and it only oocurs at highway speeds. They re-balanced all 4 tires.

I have the original 17 inch MIchelin tires that came with my EX since it was new. It only has 13,000 miles on it.
I'm thinking something is wrong with one of the rear tires. I fully inspected them and they look good. If the tread had separated, etc, wouldn't the vibration always occur at highway speeds? In my case it doesn't happen at first, anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes in then it starts. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all. The only way to get rid of it is to slow down, LOL! Sometimes after I've parked it, then taken it back on the highway, it's fine. Very strange. I betcha it goes away if I replace the tires. They are in such good shape, still 50% of their life left...

Update.. this is the strangest thing to diagnose. Everytime the Infiniti dealer has the car it doesn't do it. I've gone on 2 extended test drives with them and nothing... yet I drive the car later and it occurs, LOL! Oh well. So far it's been fine for a few days.. so time will tell..

A couple of thoughts here. I really believe that this is a wheel balance problem. First, make sure that the dealer returned the wheels and tires to their original positions on the vehicle before the brake work was done. If by chance they rotated the tires from front to back or worse, in an X pattern this could explain the new vibration. As a matter of fact, some luxury brands no longer recommend rotating the tires on their all-wheel drive cars.

The other issue is to make sure the dealer is using a "Hunter Road Force Balancer" to balance the wheels. This machine is the gold standard of balancers and is fairly common in luxury vehicle repair facilities. But not always. If they are, however using this type of machine, ask if they actually did a full "road force" balance and not just a "quickie balance" instead. Lastly, ask if the mechanic who performed the work is fully qualified to operate the Hunter machine. Not all mechanics are.

Good luck and keep us informed as to the outcome.

So far, it's like the vibration fixed itself. Nothing yet in nearly 50+ miles of highway driving over 3 days. Strange... Time will tell. The dealer I went to claimed they used a Hunter Road Force Balancer.

Which brands are these?

My Dealer once rotated my Tires... and the Road-noise was horrible... so they put them back to their original corners.

I rotate my own, not paying Infiniti's rip off $90 charge for it. I've never had a problem with noise/vibration after rotating. My EX has the stock 17 inch Michelin which have been decent tires for me.

Dumb question: when you had the balancing done, did they do an alignment?

I didn't pay for it, either. I had a "mailed to me" Dealer coupon.

Do a search on Dunlops aka Duncraps in this Forum... and you'll see why so many people hate them.

New Michelins will be on the EX35, next Summer.

I don't have the Dunlop tires. I have Michelin on my EX. I wouldn't consider a Dunlop tire.

It is gonna be strange to reply to this post since its been a while, but... can anybody tell me is anybody found reason/solution for this issue. I have the 2011 g37x sedan doing same thing and I am about to go nuts.

There was a TSB for front brake vibration during high speed driving. It turned out to be a bad front brake heat shield design that causes abnormal wear in the brake component, such as pads, rotor etc...

Mine was replaced for free, when I had my rear brake job done. Service tech pulled out the TSB , though my car did not have any brake issue at all.
It was really nice of them to save me from paying the front brake job.
