You all know about my little driveshaft problem, and thats not the issue...

Today I went down to Indianapolis (yeah, i know what your thinking, woo hoo ), hot as balls (AC on, freezing me ) and I noticed on the way home, when the torque converter would lock up, in drive around 40 mph, if i gave it just a little gas (not enough to unlock the TC),id get this terrible shuddering... It would shake the whole car and would disappear IMMEDIATELY as soon as I let off the accelerator. I was poopin around town, so i was thinking once I got on the higway it would be OK..

Not so much on that one. If I give it more than 1/2 throttle at 60mph, it shudders like this. It doesnt feel like its coming from the engine? Whatever it is, its NOT normal and only occurs when I am in the gas a little...

Im thinking the transmission is going out, so when I do a stall test it doesnt do anything funky like I might think it might.....

Any ideas? I will have to try it again later, but it hasnt done this EVER..

when the TC unlocks does the shudder go away? What about in 3rd/TC lockup?

you know the 5th solenoid on the vb is the lockup clutch solenoid [not saying that's the deal---just musing after all this solenoid talk....]......

It seems to do it a little bit in 3 but not as bad (not NEARLY as bad), once the TC unlocks I think it goes away, I didnt just keep pushing thru it... If I downshift to 3rd it goes away, I *think*. I was easy on the car after that..... When i was going slower I put it in 3rd until i got past 60mph

My diagnosis is that you were actually driving a '91 ford taurus. :-(

I went out and tried it today, didnt drive the car as long, but it did it again and went away as soon as the TC unlocked.

You know, something similar happens in my Q, but so intermittently, that it's hardly worth mentioning. It would happen to me when I first get one the highway, top gear, slight uphill, doing about 50mph. I can't ever repeat the problem, but it happens every once in a while. It lasts for about 5 minutes and usually what I do to stop the car from shuttering is give the car some gas to kick down to 3rd, or put it in third manually. After a while, it goes away as if nothing happened. I always wondered what this was. I don't notice it too much because I rarely hit the highway.

My 94 Q w/ 150K does this just off idle when creping uphill (like in line at a stop sign, or in my driveway). My brother in law's 94 (std model) w/ 75K does it, too. Otherwise both cars run fine. Vibration was a very common complaint in early Q's and dealers variously replaced lots of tires and driveshafts under warranty. Doesn anyone know if there was a design flaw? I've always suspected the transmission, but for no good reason.

Read on.

VH45DE not designed to pull at part throttle in OD at 50 mph up an incline. Clean intake paths and engine within OEM specification will, but it is best to be in 3 until 60, especially on a hill.

Check for knock sensor codes... I actually had this issue with Q1 sometimes and it turned out to be the knock sensors... My problem was more intermittant though...

Even on a very healthy "Q2" I feel like it's on the edge of bogging at 40 in D, so I typically downshift do 3 if I'm not on an interstate or whizzing along on a back road... at 50+MPH

Have you ever done KS?It 's first that comes to mind. transmission shadders (in most cases) when shifting or lock/unlock TC!The shuddering is subtle and somewhat (reluctantly) resembles drivetrain vibration. It is time to buck up and do KS Cheers!
