I have a problem with my 2000 Maxima GXE, when I break the streering wheel vibrates. It gets more violent at higher speeds. Could this be just a break problem or is there something going on with the steering column?

Warped rotors and or the addition of out of balance tires and or out of round rims [including lateral and axial runnout] or all of the above in varying degrees.Which of course wear tie rods ends and steering rack pinion gear if not attended to immediately.

Sounds like warped rotors to me. The best way to resolve this is take it to a shop that has a on the car rotor resurfacer. This cuts the rotor to the hub and reduces rotor warpage. If you have a bent rim or out of round tire or bal. problem the vibration will be when driving not braking and almost all the time. Sometimes a tire belt or side wall will start to seperate and cause a steering vibration.

How much does this usually cost?

That depends on the shop labor rate, but should run about 1.5 hours labor.
