Okay, the 1991 Q has a moderate vibration that feels like you are sitting in one of those massage chairs at the mall but not nearly as intense above 40 mph, or so, and can be felt in the car interior but not the steering wheel. It feels like it is coming from the rear. I suspected it to be the wheel bearings but I pulled one of the wheels off of the rear and there seems to be no play in them at all. I only had one of the wheels in the air with the car in park so i could see if they turned smoothly. The motor was just replaced thanks to Fred's unfortunate wreck that made his parts available, and it is not a problem with the motor. I have considered the fact that it could of been the wheels, but we have put 2 different sets of wheels (correctly balanced and with proper air pressure) on and the same thing happens. Any ideas? I am tryin to get her goin for spring break and get down to the NICO meet in comfort. Thanx!!

Dang I should have taken a ride in it when I was down there.....

It could also be the drive shaft... Is the vibration correlated to the speed???? Maybe rotors???

I intially suspected a flat spot in the tires because its been sitting for so long.....

I was hoping that you guys would of stopped by... I took apart Fred's old right rear wheel bearing assembly and worked on the sunroof. Yeah, it is correlated to the speed of the vehicle... the vehicle is completely stable at 100, but it just vibrates.

Thats most likely the driveshaft IMO.. but it could be something else..

As I recall the car had about 180k on it, seems about right for driveshaft to be toast...

Its just that they get warped and stuff like that..... The U joints get messed up too. Not sure on the technicalities.....

if it came from Freds Q i would recommend having it balanced and checked out before you put it on, as his was a high mileage one as well..... A machine shop should be able to do it...

Driveshaft replacement isnt too hard... It should be all outlined in the FSM, and if you dont have one Ill bring one to the meet you can have... Email me and I can email you that section of the FSM to you.....

(Id love to come help!)

What about motor mounts? Can't those cause vibration if they're bad?

Matt... He said the vibration comes from the rear, eliminating motor mounts...

simmsled.. Since Fred says his was only a year old, your golden then.....

Drop me a line and Ill email you the pages from the FSM about driveshafts!!!

That is so good to hear! I hope that I can swap it out and have a smooth ride for spring break!!! I have the FSM and tools, but realisticly how much time do you think it will take to swap out the driveshaft?

My car vibrated bad and I took it to the dealership and they said it was the motor mounts and the transmission mounts. It vibrated all over. They replaced both the motor and transmission mounts for $900 and now it runs great!

EVERYTHING RUBBER eventually fails and needs replacing.

Just budget the $4-5,000 and be done with it.Drive shaft, [transmission, motor, diff mounts], suspension bushings and arms, exhaust hangers, shocks.

Bearings, kingpins, etc

Simmsled. Just for your information, Id say a good day or so to do it right.... Id take a look at the FSM and start planning!!!

I dont know your speed of working but Id say it would take a good 7hours or so, dont wanna rush those things....!!!

However, like Q45tech said, it might be best to do it all at once. When the engine was installed, did new motor mounts get put in...?? transmission mounts shoudlnt be too terrible, and suspension stuff isnt too bad either.....

The driveshaft is relatively simple. Remove the 4 bolts at the back - the center carrier bracket bolts, and I belive the exhaust hangers that bolt on to the transmission crossmember. It's a very good time to go ahead and replace your transmission mount and exhaust hangers, but it's not necessary to remove the exhaust to do the job. I'd say a good three or four hours for the first time doing it. It's usually the center carrier bearing that goes bad (check for play near the carrier bracket) on the driveshafts, but they can also get out of balance when the insulation shifts between the inner and outer shaft. Keep in mind that the transmision mount bolts on to a cross-member that attaches to the chassis right under the seats - if it's collapsed - you'll get some vibrations from there too.

The bad shaft vibration also wears out the rear transmission shaft seal. When you let things go too long it can also attack the diff pinion seal and bearing.

Driveshaft, center carrier and transmission mount replacement took me all of 2 hours to replace. I had never done this before (on a Q). I highly recommend that you replace the rear transmission seal also at this time which might take you another 10 minutes.

One other thing. If you have Fred's driveshaft and it was involved in an accident. Do a thorough check on the U-joints. My old wife, driving my old Volvo put a '74 Monte Carlo on its side, resulting in minor damage to the Volvo. It did however trash a U-joint bearing, I guess due to body flex.

Well, I cant use the car to take it on spring break or get it to the NICO meet if I cant get that vibration to go 95% away. I have quite a bit of knowledge/experience taking stuff apart and putting it back together. I have the parts and the tools for the swap. Including huge breaker bars and air tools. I am going to leave Purdue tonite around 5:30 and get to the house at about 6:30. I plan on going directly to work on it then.

The swap took place a couple months ago and has barely any miles on it; less than 150. The mounts were taken care of then.

we'll see how it goes... any tips I could use?

The project was a success!!! The old driveshaft center bearing foam rubber was half gone and completely dried up. Fred's old driveshaft made it nice and buttery. Thanks Fred! I now see how the Q deceptively gathers speed without you knowing it. My next project tonite is to throw 2 pairs of 6x9's in the Q, a new cd player, and one of my amplifiers. Fun stuff!

Thanks for all your help guys!!!:ylsuper
