From NizPro:

The most interesting project as far as I was concerned all year had to be the all alloy Nissan 4.5 litre quad cam 32 valve twin turbo engine for Ian Kilpatrick’s 21 foot Force ski race boat. This was something that I had tried to get around to doing for the last 5 years.

When Ian first rang me and asked if I was familiar with this engine and if it had any potential for ski racing I couldn’t say yes fast enough. As it turned out Ian and I hit it off fantastically well which is another reason why I have loved this project so much. Engine wise this was another R&D exercise that I always enjoy. Getting a complete new engine concept together is always time consuming, but when you nail it first time up it’s also very rewarding.

I believe in the last Newsletter we were getting close to start up. Since then the whole project has been finished, tested and raced and what a dream run it's been.

In its very first outing it qualified 1st in 8.0 litre and won race one. Its second outing, a round of the Victorian point score, 1st in 8.0 litre, 1st open men's and second outright. At the Sydney Bridge to Bridge 1st 8.0 litre and broke that record by 4 minutes 30 seconds, 3rd outright before copping a 1 minute penalty for a start line infringement dropping it down to 5th outright. The last meeting was the Victorian state titles where once again it won 8.0 litre and had two second places in the super class division and open men's.

At present a larger and stronger stern-drive unit is being purchased and fitted, as the present unit is showing signs of stress. This will give Ian some confidence to use some more of the engine's power level that will be needed for next years big three river races, The Southern 80, Robinvale and Ian’s home event the Mildura 100. Next year Ian will also be trying to qualify to become one of the boats to represent Australia for the World ski race titles that will be held in either New Zealand or Hamilton Island, Queensland.

Nizpro's task is to make sure the engines that power Ian’s boat named "ORSM” are 100% reliable and have enough power to take on all comers from around the world. A new 6.0 litre version is now being developed for this task and is expected to make around 1400hp, while the current 4.5 litre engines will remain for the 8.0 litre classes.

............................................................

Let me recap by saying this has been a very rewarding project for all and has only been so successful because of a total package of engineering skills held by all concerned. Personally I have great satisfaction in watching such a small capacity engine take on the big boys and achieve great results. Although to be an outright contender in superclass we still need around 8mph top speed. This will be achieved sometime next year and I look forward to the challenge.

The team at Nizpro has worked very well all year and the success we have enjoyed does confirm this. We will be expanding our staff early next year with the addition of two new apprentices (yet to be found), and we already have lots to do.

We will also be holding some more competitions next year with some more giveaways including a 110mph ride in "ORSM” for one of the winners.

I hope it's ok if I play the video plenty of times while I have this big excrement-eating grin on my face That is awesome!!!! I love the part where he passes the house boat... really shows how fast it's going!

Wow, very nice. I wish they had a stationary camera on land to get the full effect and sound without all the wind noise.

Ditto. crazy *** engine though.

I almost think its a waste to have it on a boat. I just would like to see that thing in a car.

Weeee.....

Hes probably going about 80 or so......

GREAT SCOTT!!! that has been my dream for a while, to build a VH45 for marine use... It seems ideal beacuse it has such a high RPM range..... I think it could take 6000 RPM all day..... Most marine engines (chevy/ford/chrysler) small blocks redline at 4000 RPM in the water......

Man just listening to that thing start... whoa dude, thats the freakin engine out of your uncles beat up Q45......

Thats so freakin cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think he said maximum speed was 119 mph or so, but probably not on that run. 80 mph is damn fast on the water.

if you've never done it, then you have no idea... 45 is fast, 60 is FAST, and 75 is scary...

Im into boating as well. I have been my whole life. Mainly big boating now. We have a 26' Four winns and a 29' Larson and I have a little 4 seater with a 75 merc on back. Both the big ones sleep 4 and are very confortable and Both are kept on lake Michigan. My 4 seater is to take on the inland lakes and will only do about 40 on a good day. The Larson really suprises me at a top speed of 48 with the 454 and a Volvo outdrive.

Fastest I have ever gone was 101 mph GPS verified on an 18' Hydrostream with a tweeked 300 merc out back and jack plate. The boat had a little more in it too.

When I get the funds I will be looking for an old wood Chris craft in the 18-21' range.

My grandpa has a 23ft chris craft commander (I think thats how big it is)..... First model (IIRC) built in fiberglass... V-drive.. Still has the original engine, new interior, just needs some fresh clear coat, and maybe a VH45DE? I need to take a picture of it sometime..

Our marina is the oldest mercury outboard dealer in the world..... Since 1946 ... Im putting on a mercury "classic 50" (45HP) on my 17ft monark prototype that my uncle built when he worked for starcraft... Mercury outboards are pretty much where its at..... However, i found it pretty cool that nissan also makes some nice outboards.....

Many newer boats are going with the volvo-penta outdrives, for most of the time it seems that mercruisers have been the industry standard.

The fastest I've been was on a Sea-Doo years ago--the speedo said 75, but I highly doubt it was correct. Either way, it was scary as hell. The hull almost completely emerged--and I couldn't steer worth crap.

Thats one heck of a way to make a cold air intake!

Ronny...

Im trying to find out as much information as I can.. However hers what I know

Runs 7800 RPMMotec ECUI saw a 700HP figure... which would mean about 15-18lbs boost.....saw no mention of upgraded internals.

Recall he had forged lower compression pistons, some head work, and I think he is running 8 individual throttle bodies.

Was it a dry sump too? Can't recall.

I didnt see that..... Maybe im wrong.... whered you see that??

I think it was a dry sump.....

dont think hes running 8 individual TBs, just 2 due to that twin-can intake hes got going.

Mirage put a highly built non-aspirated VH41 into a sprint boat, making 830 hp:

A couple of quotes:

The results went to plan over 700 foot pound of torque from 2800 rpm to around 6800 rpm on 1 bar of boost with back pressure of around 7 psi so the turbo system is mint. This kept edit exhaust temps to about 900° C. Peak power was where we were aiming at for engine one, keeping reliability as the main aim. Peak rpm was capped at 7750 rpm.

I believe 1200hp will be achieved with good reliability.

He also mentions valve work, but is pretty vague on what exactly was done.

Thanks for the picture. Any more?

Need to engineer it to fit in a G50, with a little less power, say 600 hp? 525 ft. lbs. would feel great.

Yeah, no doubt you're correct. But I would like to run eight throttle bodies and eight O2 sensors on the street.

Kinda crazy...if any of you haven't heard of hydroplanes they are SICK!! Contrary to popular belief F1, IRL, or Stock Car races are not the fastest crafts to drive in a circle. The fastest race in the world runs in good old Madison, Indiana. City Size= 14,000. The boats get up to 230 or more on the straight aways!

Bit of an update from the Nizpro forums...

Quote »Kris all is going very well as far as the engine is concerned. It has used 2500 liters of fuel and hasn't even used any oil let along had an oil or filter change. The engine is currently out of the boat as a new stronger stern drive leg is being fitted as the first one is showing signs of stress. The new leg has a different height between center's of input and out put shafts, so new engine mounts needed to be made to suit. The new leg is apparently bullet proof ,so this will now allow us to lean on the engine harder. We only have 4 weeks before the southern 80 ski race so it will be close for us to be ready in time.
