I've seen this listed a few times, but never anything definitive. I've seen some people say that, with keeping all the emissions equipment, it will be a legal swap. So, my concerns are such, and if somebody has done this, or has some general advice, I would greatly appreciate their input:

1) Custom headers....we know the stock ones apparently don't clear the spacing, is there some way to make them clear, or some other headers possibly work,or some way I can work with custom headers to make them look 'stockish', or to get a ref to look the other way?

2) Manual transmission....from my understanding, the swap is supposed to be mated with it's matching engine/transmission combo. Is this 100%, or do they only glaze over that detail?

Don't listen to "hear say", go to your local certfied smog inspection and just ask them.

Problem is, I live in Georgia, and will be only moving out there next year. It's got me being all :ohno: about possibly doing a swap.

Read the law I believe it says all factory emissions must remain and aftermarket headers or modified headers won't pass carb inspection. It's not worth the time and hassle from every red I've ever seen they sometimes don't even pass stock cars so I would just find a smog guy and pay for smog.

How long do you plan on living out here for? I currently live out here and might be able to give you some tips depending on where you are going to be and how long for.

brainfood, I got a call from a bar ref and explained it, told him it would have all the emission equipment from the donor car, and that it would just have a different transmission (I didn't say anything about the headers, I figure at the worst I could bend them ever so slightly till I got the clearance I needed), and he told me flat out, even though the drivetrain has 0% effect on emissions, it would fail their smog test.

DRFTBLD, at the least, 6 months, at the most, indefinitely. It would be in the Sunnyvale area.

hope they shut them down again. it's just a waste of money to even have them there. A smog station will do the same thing.

Thats really close to me. bout 30mins away.

As for the smog issue. The transmission won't have any effect on it and you shouldn't have any issues with the transmission side of things. The headers will be tough. I can give you the number of a local test place if you want so you can ask them directly. LMK

The bar ref I spoke with stated that the transmission would be an instant fail. I would have hoped I could sneak it past, but the vh45de was only ever an automatic, so it would be glaringly obvious.

Just dont try the stock headers have like a pre catalytic converter so I doubt your going to get any of that past carb. SRs are not legal and cant pass a visual in cali and RBs as well so I would just follow in the footsteps of them.
