Yikes thats pretty cool... When you did the engine, did you line up the trans first or did it just work that way?

I assume you just needed to make the control rod a tiny bit longer on the Z32 trans, so you could make the shifter a little bit farther back.

We built the adapter first with the assumption that we could modify the shifter and mounts to fit. Unfortunately the z32 shifter sits farther back than the z31/s13 trans shifters so we had to shorten the linkage. The main problem is that when you do that to the z32 shifter it changes the geometry and you can only shorten it so much. As it is now the shifter twists a little bit when you move it to each side but its not a problem.

You should try a RB25DET trans, i know the shifter setup is different then on the Z32.It's like the KA/SR trans

The rb25 trans is probably the same model as the KA/SR/VG30E transmissions. If thats the case its not going to hold much more than 300lbft of torque without ripping a gear. The z31 87-89 turbo trans is the same design as the z32 trans but with the same shifter positioning as the ka/sr/vg30e transmissions. I think the problem with that one is that the shifter might end up a little too far forward though. Also very hard to find.

there are tons of Z31's in the junkyards down here in texas, I could probably find one. wonder if the 5 speed off that would work with the adaptor that I ordered for the Z32 TT transmission. anyway as far as the ka/sr trans goes, they have been known to be pretty bulletproof I've seen several of them making over 300 ft lbs that get drag raced and beat on and they have proven the stock transmission to be pretty darn stout.

If you can find a z31 87-89t trans you'll be lucky. The bolt pattern should be close enough to the z32 that it might bolt up. The main problem you woudl have would be the starter since the z32 has the starter bolted to the trans and the z31 has it bolted to the engine. You could find a z32 bellhousing section and bolt it to the z31 since they are interchangable.

The ka/sr/vg30e trans is good but its not meant to hold serious power. I've personally ripped the teeth off of 3rd gear doing a smooth pull in my z31. I was probably putting out about 350 lbft of torque. I would imagine the sr/ka guys dont have so many problems becuase they have lighter cars and the torque isnt usually that high. If you were sticking with a stock vh45 and you were going to be nice to the clutch you could probably get away with the sr/ka trans. Of course if you're doing the swap you probably arent giong to be nice to the car so you might as well spend the time getting a stronger transmission in to begin with.

You could always just put the Z31 shifter on the Z32 transmission, and plug the little extendo thing. Then it should just stick right through the shifter hole. (the big plate on top of the trans is still there, as Nissan trucks use this trans also and they have toploaders as opposed to the Z32's stick-out-the-back remote shifter. The toploader style would probably bolt right in if you removed teh Z32 hardware.)

Very interesting, do you know for sure if the Z31 shifter bolts onto the Z32 trans?
