Sooo, anyone done it? I had a bit of a look yesterday and I reckon it would fit with a bit of rejigging to get the coolant line out from inside the V, but not too bad. Major problem would be finding somewhere substantial to take the brackets off that wouldn't cause too much stress and break.

Mainly asking as that would free up a HEAP of room down there to fit my big truck turbo in there

I'm running 2 top mounted alternaters running off the same belt. I have the factory Q45 siting in the valley and a 24v (to run my winch) sitting above the right hand cam cover. The brakets are fairly involved and the belt has 2 idler pulleys.

So there is room but the hard part was clearing the water pipes. Not sre how it would fit with just one alternater?

Crispy it might be worth looking at the VH41 parts, or at least the coolant piping as it has the altenator up there standard.

you can see the little rose joint adjuster and its just some 5mm ali plate folded in a vice and hand drilled to hold the alternator in place,i welded stainless bends straight to the thermostat steel housing with a couple of 90s to clear all the front pulley,oh and welded another pulley to the front of the water pump-think that was off an sr20

so im interested in this also! is it possible to use the vh41 alternator and all of the mounting hardware on the vh45, i think this would allow for extra room for an a/c compressor down low!

Darin and Holeset, reckon you could put up some pictures showing your setups, I'm not too worried about the plumbing as it's getting a complete rejig anyway.

I mounted mine in front of the engine, running backwards as I had no room due to the dry sump pump.It works just fine and is pretty straightforward to do.

gives us a day or so to take better photos of the brackets, ill find out what alternator we used as well,it was all done on the cheap, the alternator is a little rickety but if you copied the brackets and made steel ones it would be more rigid, saying that the belt never ever comes off.

I don't know how much they help? The braket is attached in 3 places. One is the top of the cam gear cover. I drilled out where 2 x 6mm bolts held the cam gear cover on and replaced them so that the braket slides over the cover and a bolt goes all the way through.

The second point is the side of the right hand head where I think a factory braket bolts on. It is 3 bolts.

The third is right down the bolt by the crank pulley where I think the tensioner for the AC was.

Get raged much? Just making a joke, there is already a thread on this topic with his information. Not saying it isn't helpful, but I wasn't trying to be an ***hole.

back on topic, I do plan on doing the exact same alternator mount setup as you. it looks great and that clears more room for a twin front-mount Holset HX35 setup in my Z32. Is there any way to make it a bit lower though? I looked and figured I could have off maybe a half inch of the thermostat housing off the bottom to give more clearance.

milling the bottom of the thermostat housing is actually a very good idea! I'll have a look at my engine tomorrow (plenum is off) and see if its viable.

At the moment my alternator is around 1/2 an inch lower than the top of the plenum and it COULD possibly go another 1/2" lower with some jiggling around but I chose to leave it this height to make the coolant pipes as easy as possible.

I'd like things to be as tidy as possible so will take my design into a cnc routing place to have it milled out of aluminum plate for me- together with various holes cut out to make it look light weight. I could get another made up if you are interested to buy a bolt on part. I could eve supply longer bolts ETC ETC ETC so its a proper kit.

Also, consider going with a physically smaller alternator if space is a major issue for you. the 110a unit the vh45 has is overkill for most vehicles IMO as it seems 50-70A is the average for a passenger car.

I am interested as well if this ever comes to fruition. Fitting PS, AC, Alternator, and a turbo is a very daunting task.

110a alternator may seem like overkill but you'll like it when everything is powered up...efans tend to draw a lot of current.

interested as well. i would run two alternators like darinz though. so i would have to come up with an extra idler pulley...
