hey guys the car VH45 is out of the car and when i turn the crank i hear a slapping sound, i too the valve covers off and turned the engine and on the passenger side intake cam gear as the chains transfers to the drivers side intake gear i watch it become loose and then tighten up which causes the slapping noise then here it become loose again, is this normal or what should i be looking for? i replaced the passenger side tensioner but didn't touch the drivers side.

Is your engine a '93? If so it may have plastic chain guides used to adjust the valve timing. These were known to fail. I suggest you check the Infiniti Q45 forum and search.

The tensioners operate off of oil pressure. With the engine off there is no oil pressure so no tension on the tensioners. I wouldn't be too concerned with it.
