Upon disassembly of my VH, I noticed the o-rings on my HLA's were brittle & shot. Nissan does not sell them separately, you have to buy new HLA's. Anyone know where to get these? They are not the typical round o-ring, just flat & have a id of 15.25 mm.

Thanks!K

I searched for a long time for them to no avail.

I ended up using a regular round rubber washer and it has worked just fine.

I just took one of the old ones to NAPA and found the closest size I could

Thanks Paul, but it looks like there was never a solution. I will look around & post anything I find.

Are SR's actually solid or hydro?

they are hydro but all kinds of people make solid lifters for sr20s.

Well, if one was to convert to solid lifters on the VH, I'm assuming you'd need solid cams, & a way to adjust lash?

What are the advantages?

Isn't the VH's perfectly smooth idle due to HLA's?

If you get the type of solid pivots that the shims go inside the pivot, they should work on the VH (I think the HKS ones are like this. The Tomei ones, on the other hand will definitely not work as there won't be any way to adjust them.

I have not tried this on the VH pivots, but with the SR ones, you can take the pivots apart and throw a couple of RB26 shims that are milled down to the correct thickness to make your own solid lifters. It's a lot more cost effective than buying FOUR solid kits for the SR (remember, the SR only has 8 pivots compared to 32 for the VH)

Then there's the question you had about the cams: Are the rocker arms are strong enough to take the abuse of cams designed for the hydraulic pivots. (the ramp is more aggressive for hydraulic cams)

The advantage is that all of the lift of the cam goes to lifting the valve opposed to the very slight collapse of the hydraulic pivots. I'd say the difference is negligible with stock cams, but if one were to upgrade cams and springs, there's more strain on the pivots.

to the OP, you can buy the o-rings separately, but you will need to search thru industrial supply catalogues, etc. They ARE indeed o-rings (i bought one HLA from nissan just to verify). they are very thin and metric, 1mm by 14mm viton is what worked for me.
one must reason why they are there....without them the HLAs can too easily 'bleed down' even with full oil pressure.

Hmm... If those O-rings are shot, that could lead to the drain back issues...

The SR might not need them since there are only 8 of them, but with 32, that's quite a bit of oil that'll get channeled to the head.

Hmm, this sounds like a job for McMaster-Carr..

Looks like you could get a box of them no problem.

This is about as close as I can get.

Image

OEM on left, new o-ring on right.

Company name is Lutz
Part # 7CO583
Metric 15mm ID X 1MM C/S 70
Buna

This fits snugly into the HLA's original square ring groove, & actually provides a good seal in the HLA bore when inserted. Only problem (if any) is that it's an o-ring, not square like original.

Hope this helps any one.
