Gentlemen,
I finally got around to start the timing belt job on my beloved VG30E powered '95 D21 HB.

We're almost done with the job, but the Gates T249 belt I have seems to have not enough slack.

My friend turned the tensioner all the way to the left and temporarily tightened it in place, so we're trying to follow the procedure.

For those that have done the timing belt on their VG30E motors... did you notice as well that the belt was quite tight, difficult to get over the last cam sprocket?

I am wondering if we should try removing the tensioner alltogether, installing the timing belt and THEN mounting the tensioner.

Any thoughts?

TIA!

Ok, I think I figured it out.

The Gates belt has two solid marks and one dotted. Turns out the dotted one's supposed to go to the crank, the two solids to the cam sprockets. For some reason, we saw "CR" next to one of the solid lines and interpreted that as "crank".

Will try again tomorrow evening and report back. Worst case scenario we can always count teeth.

Will follow up.

when i put the new timing belt on my vg33er, i put the belt on the crank pulley, lined up the marks on the cams sprockets, and then slide the belt onto the tensioner. as long as you have all the marks lined up right then everything should be okay. Hopefully you also were given the correct style of belt (square tooth vs rounded tooth). when i re-tightened the tensioner, the hex hole lines up with the edge of the crank pulley....quite easily seen if you leave the hex wrench in the hole and see the angle. if the hex wrench is long enough, it pretty much stops against the crank pulley. good luck.

Hey man, thanks for the response and sorry for the delay in responding.

We finished the truck last week and I put about 100 miles on it. The truck runs great, noticeably smoother... but there's a slight whine. I read somewhere that a timing belt that is too tight might whine like a supercharger. I will look a little more into it and follow up if I find something out.

TIA!
