I'll tell you right now. Nissan used the same set up in 84-89 z31's as is in the 90-98 z32's. The only differences are the head, intake manifold, exhaust, and electrical. The block as you say is slightly larger at the top to incorperate the extra width of the DOHC heads. The mounts for the block and tranny are identical and you can use your old z31 tranny if you like.
I looked into doing this for when I was going to get an 86 2 seater z31, but I ended up getting a 240sx instead.
