very strange noise from under hood

hey i just bought this 240 last night and there is a very weird rattling noise. like it sounds like a heat shield rattling and its only at that certain rpm

at what certain rpm? look on the exhaust manifold heat shield. or maybe the shields running around exhaust after the manifold. just touch stuff while the car is on and rattling til somethin you touch changes or silences the noise. careful, don't burn yourself either, it gets real hot.

Question related to this:

Would it be safe to just remove a rattling heat shield? Or should I just tighten/replace the bolts?

Mine is also making this loud and annoying noise.

Typically removing a heat shield should be fine. If it were me I'd replace the bolts/fix the rattle if I had a choice.

Mine rattles as well, but it's because 2 of the bolts have the heads snapped off, and I'm too lazy to try to extract them. :P

One addtinal thought:Before removeing a heat shield, take a good look near the shield to be sure there are no aftermatket or re-routed wires that need the protection from the heat.

I have seen heat shields removed and then problems caused by wires overheating etc. If there is a wire or two just re-route them or build a small shield just for them that you can secure without the rattle.
