There's not a lot of bolts in the top assembly. Most of the bows and stuff are held together with clevis pins. You can check a lot of the top frame without pulling the whole top. So I would do that. It would save you the hassle of having to strip the thing down. I would look at most of the hinged areas first, and then start looking for where the top is secured to the car for potential loose bolts and nuts. More than likely, you have a clevis pin that has busted its weld and is rattling free (I've seen a load of these break just due to the thin metal, tiny welds, and years and years of flexing)
