Hey gang,

We've mentioned this fact a few times in various threads in the past, but I don't think we've ever really worked to get the exact details figured out.

My understanding is that the 'vert got a slightly larger brake master cylinder than the hatch or coupe variants of the S13 chassis. The reasoning for this is the 'vert carries slightly more weight, and as such, was fit with the slightly larger ABS brake components for the front wheels. So in concert with those larger brake parts, the master cylinder was also slightly upgraded.

But, what are the specifics?

What size is it? (I think other 240's got a 15/16th size, while the Z32 got a 1 1/16 size.. did we get the 1" variant?)

What's it comparable to?

Is it big enough to do a sufficient job for a 300zx brake conversion?

If anyone has any input on this, please share.

Thanks

Some Z32s were 1" as well as 17/16.

I never thought about the cylinder being bigger. If its like the Z32 MC then it will say the size on the side of it, close to the booster.

The stock hatch/coupe MC does ok with Z32 brakes on the front, so if this one is bigger it should be good.

This is the best information I've seen on the subject but you've probably already read through it. Still for others:

I can tell you ours isn't a 1" cylinder. I have a Z32 1" on mine, and it was definitely larger than the 240 part.

For 240s the ABS and non-ABS cars had identical MCs from what I gathered, with the exception of the center line being plugged.

And for more proof, I have definitely seen a difference in braking performance on my Z32 26mm calipers between the old 240 MC and the Z MC. On the old MC, the brakes were touchy and locked up easily. Now I can stand on the pedal better without the brakes locking up.

Someone take a look at their stock MC and tell me what's printed on the side. I can't use mine for that anymore since it's been upgraded.

According to the website I cite above the difference in the MC size is based on manual vs. automatic:

"The manual trans equipped 240 has a smaller stock MC than an automatic equipped 240. The brake booster offers more assistance with the automatic equipped 240. Using the automatic's booster along with either the 1" or 17/16" MC will offer the same advantages of a larger MC but with an easier pedal."

I'll check the numbers at lunch.

Either or, the auto MC is still smaller than a 1" Z MC. If I'm reading your quote right.

I think non-ABS 240s got a 7/8" MC, and ABS and vert 240s got a 15/16" MC.
