Although I've already posted about this stuff in the past, I finally took some in-car video & there's a nice pic of my car, so thought I'd share, haha.
"Myths":1) You need a manual, auto sucks2) If you have low hp, there's no need for wider tires3) Convertibles are not competitive
The reason why myths is in quotes, is that these are partially true: after a certain point, you'd want a manual, the lightest car, the least unsprung weight per unit of grip, etc, etc... however, until the driver catches up, it's not needed. I believe that's the part most beginners miss, the driver is the weakest link in the car for a LONG time. I've been doing autocross (and more recently visited Horse Thief Mile (hpde) where I got destroyed by a lot of the guys there) for just over the past 2 years as often as I can & there is still so much I'm learning every time I get out there.
That being said, found a picture someone took of me on autoblog from GReddy Performance Festival this past weekend (and most of you vert guys don't visit the local forum, so weee):Autoblog link & the rest of the pics
Basically stock drivetrain (w/ hi-flow cat & rs-r exhaust), full suspension, & 265/35R18's all around, hee hee - Federal 595RS in front, Hankook RS-2's in back on a staggered setup (yea, don't worry about it, haha). And yes, I'm competing on 18" rims, .
Got my *** handed to me by the SCCA regulars who attended the event (including the 2 girls who've been racing the past year or two), but beat nearly all the "noobs" - in all their manual/350z/s2000 glory. -> goes to show that these drivers were the weakest links in their cars.
And here's an in-car vid:GReddy Performance Festival Autocross run in S13 vert
Car's still being worked on, it's getting there. Driver's slowly improving, too. I'm positive my car could have gone faster w/ a better driver. So off to more events I go!
*As a side note, 265/35R18's fit in the front of the s13... with some work. Took me a good week of massaging and fine tuning, and it's still rubbing at a couple points, o well.
