That is normal, you know. All cars with automatic (or CVT) transmissions will vibrate when in gear at a stop, as the engine is under a load at this time. If the car is misfiring when the brake pedal is pressed, that's a whole different ballgame.

It's not normal on my car. When I'm at a stop and my radio and heat are off, I've often thought my car was off. I get no vibration whatsoever. I've got an SL with CVT.

Maybe hte idle speed is off. At certain idle speeds, you can get a resonance in the engine mounts, that will transmit vibraton ot hte cabin. My '03 Corolla would vibrate... almost like an automatic on cold days with the defroster on.

This is true, may times, the only way for me to know the car is running is by looking at the tach. The CVT does not appear to have a very aggressive torque converter, where the automatic (4 speed) does. If CodeRed has an "S" automatic, he will definitely feel some vibration. How bad is the vibration, anyway?

I suspect it's an automatic and since he's in Florida, the Air condition is on. I once rented a Ford Contour in Florida. I couldn't stand sitting with hte car in gear. I had ot keep putting it in neutral... it's wasn't just noticeable... the WHOLE car vibrated and rattled. Gnerally, if you're sitting for more than 10 seconds or so, it's good for the transmission and saves fuel ot place the car in neutral.

After owning a CVT, it would be tough to go back to a conventional automatic. So smooth... Anyhow, the old mazda 626 I had was aweful... has the same tramsmission as the countour, it shook violently at stops, SLAMMED into gear, and it always felt like i was rearended whenever it shifted into second. The alternator was so undersized, it screamed like a turbocharger... when I used the directionals at stops, the engine speed would fluctuate with the directional flasher. That car also required a transmission flush every 10,000 miles... NEVER AGAIN!!!!
