Car: nissan versa 1.8s manual

Post

I purchased a 2010 Versa 1.8s manual to tow behind the RV. Normally one would turn the key to the first position to unlock the wheel for towing. However I noticed that the wheel does not lock even when the key is turned all the way to the left and removed. This is great for me as I would not have to leave the ignition on with the keys in while towing. Wanting to make sure this is correct and my steering lock is not simply broken ( this would be a problem if it decided to start working while being towed) I called Nissan. She had to put me on hold for quite some time while she found out from someone else. She came back on the line and said that the wheel should lock and I should take it in for service. A call to the dealer said they did not know for sure but thought maybe it did not lock. Can anyone here tell me definitively whether my steering wheel is supposed to lock or not?
Thanks Dave

That's exactly how things went with my old car. I'd turn the wheel and it'd click and lock. I did notice my 09 Versa S Hatch did not lock. When I pull the key and turn the wheel it just seems to seize up and stop moving of course turning on the car gets everything moving again. If it's supposed to lock I wouldn't mind knowing for sure.

What exactly does the steering lock mean?

Is this when you try to turn the key but it will not budge at all? If so, that happened to me ... not sure how, but I had to jiggle the steering wheel a bit before the key would turn forward (and no it was not the FPR).

steering should lock -- it's one of the anti-theft devices.

as well, Versas should not be towed -- you'll invalidate the warranty

Thanks for the replies so far although nothing definitive yet. Yes you can tow a Versa 4 down, its in the owners handbook. If your car is automatic it will say you cannot. Hoping someone with the same model can reply.

Thanks for that info blindsnyper, most likely they mean for it to lock then and I have a problem with mine. I think I will take it to a Nissan dealer and ask if they can remove the little cam of whatever is in there so it will be sure to never lock. If they will do that.

Uh... do you know how to engage the steering lock? You turn the ignition completely to lock - then turn the steering wheel clockwise to engage it.

Thanks.. I just tried that with the key in and set to lock no matter where or how far I move the wheel it does not lock. There's no click or stopping of the wheel it freely moves around and around. I tried turning the key further to counter clockwise but it doesn't budge I tried pressing it in and nothing? Maybe I'm not doing it correctly?

turn the car off, take the key out, and turn the wheel clockwise.

That was the very first thing I tried, that's what used to work in my old car. That does not work in the Versa it does not seem to lock when I turn the wheel? I'll ask the dealer see what they say about it as I've a minor issue with a creaking drivers seat that needs lubed or something.

I think since you have the exact same model as me eg the 1.8 manual it may be that they eliminated the lock feature on that model. I have not had a chance to get into a dealer yet but when I do I Will ask to look at a 1.8 manual and see whats up.

That's odd they'd remove the steering lock from the car just because it's a manual? I'm sure it can't cost that much more to keep it on if was added with the automatics only? I've driven manual cars back home, some quite a old now and they would lock? lol
