I just got a 2008 Versa SL and it worked great for two days. Unfortunately now, on a cold start(car sitting for more than two hours) I start the car via the intelligent key and the engine just turns but won't start. The second time around it always works.

The blue intelligent key light is lit and everything.

I tried to hard start it with the physical key and that seems to work fine even after an overnight rest.

Any ideas on what's going on?

The dealer says they have never heard of this either.

I have a Cingular GPS cell phone but that's all I can think of that could be affecting it.

thanks,Tranger

you have a fuel pump failure if you have less than half a tank of gas take it to the dealer and tell them to let it sit for 2 hours and have them try to start it. It will fail for them on the first attempt. they will then replace the fuel pump for you under warranty.

A lot of 07 and 08 Versa have or had this problem.

Uh oh. Your problem might not have anything to do with the ikey. There have been well-documented problems with fuel pumps on Versas. The symptoms sound a lot like what you describe. Do a quick search on here for "starting problems" or "fuel Pump". Good luck and welcome to the forum!*edit: oops. alonsorules8 posted just before me. Didn't mean to be redundant.

If it always starts with the hard key then I cant see it being the fuel pump!

Need more facts!

That could just be coincidence. It could have just been a fluke that it started on the first try the few times that he used the hard key. It certainly sounds exactly like the fuel pump issue. Especially since he says that the engine was turning over...it just didn't start. If the car wasn't recognizing the ikey it wouldn't even turn over.

thanks for all the quick responses! I'll definitely mention the fuel pump when I take it back in to the dealership.

NewsFlash though, I just went out to my car without my cell phone and the intelligent key worked just fine. Coincidence?

I'll just leave that part out when talking to the dealer and just tell him that I read about Versa's having fuel pump problems.

and the first and only time I tried the hard key start was this morning. It could most definitely be a conincidence that it started.

Too many possibilities. I'll mention them all when I take it in.

thanks everyone.

yea... if the iKey isn't connecting, the ignition won't even turn - it just locks up and flashes a red iKey symbol at you...

Nissan says don't put your cellphone in the SAME POCKET as your iKey, as it CAN cause the iKey to scramble and not function. (only confirmed on the Altima)

The symptoms you describe are NOT the same as an iKey malfunction.

If your iKey gets scrambled or malfunctions, the car won't even turn over, or for that matter, unlock with the iKey. It will work fine with the physical key.

I agree, your problem is the fuel pump. The fact that it worked fine with your physical key is irrelevant, it was just a coincidence.

I mentioned this Versa fuel pump problem the last time I was at the Nissan dealership and the service manager said that he has NEVER seen or heard of such a problem with the Vs. He said that some earlier Sentras had fuel pump issues but NEVER the Versa. I told him that I had experienced the problem twice in the first 100 miles on my car AND I told him of the experiences of those on this forum. He basically said that the people on those forums are misleading and ill informed......I did not have time to argue, but I certainly know better.

It really grinds my mule when the dealerships treat you as if you were an idiot!!

Tell the mechanic to check the TSBs. Nissan has definitely notified dealers.

If they still deny it - call Nissan direct.
