Most insurance companies have a thresshold about 75-80% of the vehicle's replacement value before they total it. When I got whacked last year, my V took $8,000 in damage. It was repaired by the insurance company, it wasn't anywhere near close enough to totalling.
Of course, these things were so rare back then, that the replacement value of the car was actually $15,705... the MRSP.
But yes, you are right. And that is actually a general rule of newer cars, since the advent of multiple airbags. Pop an airbag and that will cost a ton... pop two and you're most of the way to totalling the vehicle, probably over if you have extensive damage.
