That is indeed very disturbing. And I agree the Obuma administration might try to point the fickle finger of fate again at Dubya. I could see them citing the 2001 Patriot Act which GWB signed into law. Of course, the fact BO signed an extension to that act in 2011 would be downplayed.

Or the fact that the specific section (215?) is being interpreted (twisted?) pretty darn "liberally" :chuckle: to make it apply in this particular case!

And, of course, I suspect that Verizon is not the only one that received the "request" for the records. :frown:

And people never got why I would periodically say "hello to the NSA dude monitoring this call" after saying something controversial.

The administration claims this falls within the spirit of the Patriot Act. Sensenbrenner says "ORLY?"

And, as I had suspected at one point, it is way more than just Verizon that is forced to provide these records:

Got an interesting email detailing how opening an email from Verizon about the leak on a government computer would be considered a breach of security and to ignore the email.

http://www.policymic.com/articles/47041 ... 007-speech

"No more illegal wiretapping of citizens, No more national security letters to spy on citizens who are not suspected of a crime. No more tracking citizens who do nothing more than protest a misguided war. No more ignoring the law when it is inconvenient. That is not who we are. And it is not what is necessary to defeat the terrorists. The FISA court works. The separation of powers works. Our Constitution works. We will again set an example for the world that the law is not subject to the whims of stubborn rulers, and that justice is not arbitrary. This administration acts like violating civil liberties is a way to enhance our security. It is not…There is no short cut to protecting Americans”.

FISA was introduced in 1978 by Chappaquiddick Ted and signed into law by Mr. Peanut. The roots of this debacle are decidedly on the left side of the aisle despite the additional provisions of the Patriot Act from 2001.

I want to laugh at that, but while there is no stated position like that, essentially, the power brokers are looking at the American people that way. I find it interesting that these folks are the generation that were watched by the government during the sixties and seventies for the same suggested reasons. The NSA doesn't have to tap my phone to hear what I think. I'll be happy to call them and invite them to perform sexual acts on themselves.

That's the only thing that keeps me positive. Freedom is the natural state of man and everything done to deny that takes effort to prevent the pendulum swinging back and becomes exponentially more difficult.

I would agree ... except that I think that we are currently raising a generation of sheeple. And these people have been quite desensitized on the issue of freedom - particularly individual freedom - due to the many attempts to take away those freedoms. :frown:
