I had an engine swapped last year, and would like to verify what was put in there. How can I possibly do this?

To my knowledge, the mechanic (noticed I didn't use the word "technician") swapped engines with a known JDM VHD45E from a 90-96 Q45. However, I'd like to determine whether he might have put in a later G50 engine that doesn't require me to revisit the chain guide issue (wasn't aware of this time bomb at that time).

Well first let me backtrack, would it have been possible at all? Is it safe to assume that is not not possible since the '94-'96 had a detuned engine that is different from the '90-'93 VHD45E to ever make it work. By that, what I mean is wouldn't it require a set of other new components such as ECU, TCU and various other things that I'm not aware of in order for it to be in running condition? The fact that my car is running now makes me doubt that there's a '94-'96 engine sitting in there without additional upgrades, but I just need to get some sort of confirmation. If by chance I have a '94 and later engine, needless to say I would be saving thousands of dollars not spending on the chain guide replacement.

The external differences between [90-93] and [94-95] are the CAS and the Maf and its connector and the transistor coil driver pack on each valve cover plus the drivers side front vacuum solenoids.

ECU changes between them and a total wiring harness change.Don't see many 94-95 JDM imports yet.

I doubt he is smart enough to make it work.........?

Is the absence of pre-cats a sure sign that it's a JDM engine?

What Dennis said:its real hard to make a 94/95 or even later work in a 90-93 .I think way back, a couple members have done it, but their last posts were always about all sorts of drivability issues and then no more posts..

Vice Versa:Even Byron (T3 Master Tech) felt a nearly free 91 engine wouldnt be as good as choice as a $1800 994 in a 94 Q, cuz the extra stuff needing to be done would have driven the swap up to be equal price or possibly more. And still not have assurance that there wont be any probs.

In summary, if its in your car and runs well , its a 90-93.

Dennis / Fred - Thanks for the inputs.

I also remember a post a long time ago (which I can't find now) that perhaps mentioned that the VIN is located on the engine and/or transmission. Is that accurate information? If so, where would that VIN be located?

I think there was another post that mentioned one can determine the production model year of the Q based on the VIN. This could be my only method of determining the engine year definitively.
