I hear it at all times now where before it started and went away.
If I remember correctly I have penzoil 10w-30 full synthetic. Been a couple months so I don't remember.

Here's a vid

I can't listen to the vid now because I'm at work, but if the noise went away is definitely was NOT rod knock. Rod knock doesn't go away, it just gets worse.

What you probably have is lifter tick, you should try one of the following:

1. Run some Sea Foam with the oil for a few hundred miles (do this like 2-3 times)
2. Run some Marvel Mystery Oil, same way as above
3. Run some ATF in the oil for a few hundred miles

If you do any of those, just buy some cheap oil filters and change it with the oil after like 150-200 miles to really get the gunk out. After a long time of running conventional oil (back in the 90's), the lifters get buildup on them (varnish) and can make them stick. Once they're stuck, they don't cushion the valves anymore and make a ticking noise.

Yea that's what I've been thinking as well, but before I left Tucson this weekend my girl put 87 in my tank. It was making the noise before she put it in but it's just scaring me lol... Seems to be louder now...maybe due to the higher compression caused by the lower fuel grade?

Well you have an NA so it shouldn't be too terrible, but I would fill it with as much 93 (or 91) as you can fit that way it will at least mix with the 87. Just don't go flooring it lol

The lifter tick will get louder if you don't do anything about it, its not something that will just correct itself. Running some solvent (sea foam, ATF, etc.) should help though.

I was going to get some ATF and run my car for about 15 minutes (at idle) and then put some 10w-40 Mobil1 in...

Sound good?

Gas doesn't work that way.

Yea I realize that, I miss interpreted what I was reading trying to understand how 87oct can detonate an engine. I have a better understanding now.

No biggie, someone on the Facebook z32 help/tech group yesterday swore that running 87 would mess up your injectors
