Basically the story goes like this. My 2009 Rogue's Service Engine Soon light came on, so I went to Advance Auto Parts to read the code, and came up with a large evaporative emissions leak. I cleared the code, but it came back on a couple days later. After searching around the forum I discovered that the likely cause was either my gas cap, or more likely the vent control valve. It seems that most people have had problems with the vent control valve and had it replaced at the dealer, but my car has 41,000 miles on it and is out of warranty. I found that a rough estimate for the job is 300 dollars parts+labor. My dealer quoted me 120+tax for the valve, which I can deal with, but I'm having trouble locating the valve.

I've heard that the valve is located under the rear of the car, but I'm not sure where. Does anyone have any idea where this is located? Thanks.

Take a look here at the Factory Service Manual (FSM): http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Rogue/2009/EC.pdf

I found some things about the EVAP Valve Control System there and think it will be helpful. A lot of good stuff is in the FAQ sticky including the link to the full FSM. Good luck, I had to take mine in under warranty and it was over $300 on the invoice.

EDIT: Check Page 926 and just so there is no confusion, that link applies only to the 2009 Rogue. There are FSM's for the other model years too.

The evap canister and vent control valve are located underneath the vehicle, on the passenger side just behind the rear tire.

Bill875 pointed to the manual section EC. This is where you will find the information on how to test and replace the valve.

Manuals for all years (besides the '09) can be found here:

Thanks guys, this is great info! I appreciate it, and I'll give it a shot on my own most likely.

Be careful. I am not sure if Nissan has made changes to their EVAP designed or not. My 2003 sentra and Maxima you had to replace both the valve and the canister. The bolts would be so rusted that you couldn't get them out and would end up cracking the plastic evap canister.

Just did a post for my 2010 Nissan Rogue that already needs to have vent control valve repalced twice. I am still in warranty though but you can check if the below recall is still effective for your vehicle: http://www.lyberty.com/car/Maxima_A32_d ... 00-060.pdf

Thank you UncleZhou.

However, tech bulletins normally only apply to vehicles up to the year they were issued. In this case 2000.

I would suggest Rogue owners with the CEL bring their vehicle in for service even if out of warranty. If the cause is the Evap/Vent control valve and your vehicle is out of warranty, then perhaps they may extend a 'good will' warranty.

I did have this same issue. And I could not get it covered under warranty.
