My 96 J30 was giving VSS malfuncation (P0500). I changed the Speed Sensor but today after around 2 weeks the check engine light came on again. Both the the times (before i installed a new VSS and today) i had done hard acceleration on a freeway and then the check engine light came on. The speedometer (always) works perfectly well and the gears shift properly. Can anyone please help.

How do you knowwhich sensor it was anyway?

You do know there are at least one on each wheel.

I think it is installed in the Transmission (according to the Service Manual for '96 J30). The speed sensor on each wheels is for the ABS. In case it is not working then the ABS light should be on.

How did you read the code?

From the engine computer or the trans computer?

I think it is the engine computer. The one under the instrument Panel. I went to Autozone for the code.

Also before i got the VSS changed i checked the connection between Speedometer head and the ECU. As i understand VSS feeds the Speedometer head and from Speedometer head it goes to ECU. Now i am not able to figure out that if the VSS is good, Speedo is acurate and the Speedo to ECU connection is good then What is wrong?
