My '92 240SX has been intermittently stalling on deceleration and the AT has been shifting way too high (3500-4000) into all gears . Well, using a ton of info from NICO club + 240sx.org I ran the AT self-diagnostics and came up with a code 1 and ran the engine malfunction diagnostics and came away with a 14 (Vehicle Speed Sensor.) As is common to many 240's, my speedo intermittently craps out - is that what's giving me the VSS error AND could it also be the cause of my other issues? Also, could anyone tell me what the code 1 for the AT means?

BTW - Trolling eBay I can find the FSM for $60-70 and a lot of CD's for $5-10...Does anyone have any experience with the CD's? I can tell you that I have the Chiltons and it sucks ***!!!

Thanks Alot,Choppa

is the free online FSM link in my sig still down???

you've gotta check continuity on the wires to the sensor/ test the sensor itself/ then finally attack the cluster gauge...

code 1 and ECU trouble codes are similar to your problems: u gotta check the connection to the VSS... it's either shorted (most likely, since you say it works intermittently) or disconnected.

Modified by ricebike at 12:00 AM 9/11/2006 code 1 is the revolution sensor so check connections to it to see if it's disconnected or shorted to another wire... separate circuit from the VSS

rev sensor: black white wiresVSS: yellow/black stripe & yellow/blue stripe wires

Yeah...The link to the FSM still seems to be down (looks like the billing Dept is lookin' for you)

Anyways - Thanks for the info!!! This weekend I'll trace the wires and check out the revolution sensor and the VSS. Wish me luck...

Peace,Choppa

...Just a quick reply to thank everyone that contributes to the board...After searching the 240SX technical forum I solved the problem.

While backpinning the AT computer it became apparent that the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) was the problem. It's supposed to spec out @ 1-10Kohms (closed - WOT). Well, the sensor was registering 9Kohms closed! I guess the computer thought the engine was at WOT all the time and that is why the transmission refused to shift until 5K RPM. $30 for a new TPS and the car is back in business. I just wish I had popped the hood and tested the TPS to begin with - my back is still killing me from removing the AT computer!!!

Again - Thanks everyone!
