Hi I have a 1992 Nissan Maxima I've been hearing the common "tick tick tick" noise from my engine I have done alot of research and found it to be most likely bad VTC's, as this a common problem. I was wondering if anyone knows of good places/websites to get a replacement reliable engine, or can some one tell me if it's possible to be an oil issue because they are oil pressure activated. So possibly would a higher vescosity oil help the issue? Thanks.

Also to all add to this i just drove it, usually it is making thge noise constantly as soon as it warms up a bit. knowing that it is a hydraulic part using engine oil i drove it at high rpms to maybe make the oil pressure higher and now it isn't making any noise at all when it's at idle (which is the only time you can actually hear it because of the actual engine noise that is always going on). also i felt a some more power come back to the engine like it used to have. so is it possible that these can be flushed out with high pressure oil or is this just a tempory fix to the issue.

I apologize for the delay in a reply. To start you off though, the problem is generally from the oil passages in the VTC assembly being dirty from what I understand. They can be rebuilt to completely fix the issue or, as you have mentioned, you can just replace the engine with a low cost replacement, which I've seen to be popular as well. As far as where to go, you may check our NICO Sponors as I believe there are some engine importers listed in there, if they don't have them listed you may still give them a call to see if they can help you out.

I've not seen a fix by changing the oil or by a flush, though if its in the early stages a flush might me able to pull it off... I've just not got to mess with one so am not 100% sure on how that would work.

Another sort of temporary fix is to ground the VTC assembly. I'll have to find the diagram but basically you're disabling the VTC's which gets rid of the ticking noise. It does completely disable their function so you will lose a bit of power but they at least won't make the ticking noise.

Once you either get them fix or replace the engine, I highly recommend that you use a high quality oil filter and be sure to have regular changes. That seems to be considered the biggest issue and the best way to keep them alive.
