I'm pretty sure the car will slip with or without the VDC off. At least mine does..

Couple things -

1) Launching your car with less than 1,000 miles on it isn't a very good idea at all. It goes against the breakin procedure outlined in your owner's manual. I have never tried lunching my car though, and I'm not sure there is anything about lunching in the owner's manual. You might be ok.

2) That weird knocking/popping may be "wheel-hop". This is experienced typically under hard acceleration on cold tires (one of many scenarios, the other being that the Altima Coupe's suspension isn't built to withstand hard launching, especially not with the factory touring tire that is equipped). Your CVT didn't do that because the CVT doesn't allow for the low end power that your MT is providing.

3) The Altima Coupe is equipped with both VDC and TCS. You can disable the VDC, but you cannot disable TCS without an ECU modification. This is why you still see the SLIP indicator upon breaking traction.

I too have had the sporadic phantom VDC light stay on, with no other symptoms. It typically went off by itself after a few starts.

Well...today was a little different. Driving home in bumper to bumper highway traffic during heavy rain, the car stalled. It quickly started, but both VDC and SLIP lights stayed on, and the car wouldnt rev much past 2K, idled slightly roughly, but stayed on. I pulled into emergency lane, and drove to nearest exit, where I turned the car off for couple minutes. I have had other cars with exact same problem, result of some water splashing up into electronics. After 2 minutes...same problem. I figured out as long as I stayed under 2K, the car drove fine, so I took back roads home.

I stopped for coffee, and the 10 minute break did the trick! Full power, all warning lights off. My mechanic stated that with 89K on original wiring, there could be cracks in the coils and such, and moisture getting in there would cause loss of power due to VDC engaging.

Pretty scary stuff. I have new plugs on hand, so looks like I will arrange for plug replacement sooner rather than later....

If you get VDC + Slip lights coming on randomly, the first thing you need to check is your brake fluid level. If it is low, it will cause this, which may trigger other ECU safeguards like limp mode.

Check this first before some mechanic goes way too far down some rabbit hole and tells you that you need to rebuild your whole electrical system. It's like going to WebMD for a cough and them telling you it's a symptom of near death.
