what could be causing this?
As a further FYI, something similar (on the console anyway) happens when the rotation rate of one of the wheels is significantly different from the others - not sure if it is only the front wheels.
Last Saturday, I had a flat tire (front left) due to a nail and put the temporary spare on. It only had 35 psi in it rather than the 60 it should (I have not been checking the spare as often as I should!).
So, after moving a bit, both the VDC and SLIP errors would show on the center console. Would reset on power off - did it a number of times since I was out running errands and stopped in multiple places.. When I reached home, I used my electric tire pump to get it to 60 psi and then all was well from that point on.
Tuesday, my new tires were in and all is well ... for a different reason!
FWIW, my Michelin Pilot Super Sport 245/45-18 tires lasted 29k miles (rated at 30k) - longer than the older Pilot Sport A/S, so the cost per mile was better for a way better tire! Even if I say that the actual tread use was probably closer to 27k to 28k (see below).
OTOH, I had been meaning to replace the tires soon anyway, since I was down to 2/32 (I usually change at 3/32 or 4/32 - and was being lazy). Luckily, the deflation did not occur at high speeds - turned out that the inner edge of that tire was worn down to metal belt showing.

In retrospect, I am glad that the nail hit when it did!
