Hey guys new to the forum and to nissan period wanted to ask a question or 2. I just bought my 99 nissan frontier and want to do the SR20 swap. my mechanic is going to sell me the redtop but i was wondering if i should just get the S14 blacktop because it has VCT? Does anyone know how that works and would it have to be wired up? Thanks guys. SR's are the ****

VTC in your S14 engine does increase a bit of torque at high RPM (last time I saw a dyno chart, it was about 5500 RPM). I personally don't see much benefit from it. Besides, if you upgrade cams VTC is bye bye anyways.

If you are going to get a S14 motor just because of VTC then I say don't do it.

Plus the VTC blacktop is going to be more expensive compared to a s13 blacktop or any other sr that does not have VTC (redtop) granted the VTC sr comes with a ball bearing turbo. But like the post above me stated its not very much noticeable..I would say its not very much noticeable accept on a piece of paper after a dyno because many guys I know with it say that if it stopped working they most likely wouldnt even notice.....I would say save your money and do a turbo upgrade, you'll feel that a lot more than you would VTC

vtc does not help top end torque. it helps bottom end torque. it does not engage like vtec does. it actually disingages a little above 2000rpm.

and you can upgrade cams and keep vtc. several companies make cams now that can retain it.

it works nothing like honda's VTEC. VTC simply changes the timing on the intake cam on the s14 Notchtop. on the s15 Notchtop it adjusts the timing on the intake AND exhaust cam.

no just changes the timing hence varying the overlap time of intake and exhaust stroke.

rwd sr20's have no such thing, but its possible to adapt a sr20ve head, which has 3 lobes similar to honda's VTEC system.

I agree with the dissimilarity to VTEC, but I don't think you're accurate in saying the S15 notchtop varies both int and exh timing, as I'm pretty sure the S15 head casting leaves room for only one actuator, just like the S14 one.
