Recently found my old VHS movies and decided to try out the VCR. It worked well until I ejected a tape and accidentally let the top cover slam down on it before completely removing the tape from the unit.
The tape got stuck inside, with the little flap door on the VCR stuck open. When I press PLAY, the triangle PLAY icon shows on the screen for a few seconds (screen stays blue) before the square STOP icon appears and the VCR shuts off entirely. If I turn it back on and press EJECT, the tape will move back inside the VCR like it it's going to eject, but fails to rise out. From this position, I was able to pull the tape out manually with a metal hook (came out easily with no resistance), but the same exact problem occurs when I tried putting a tape back in. I have tried other tapes, same issue.
I did some research on VCR's and looks like it could either be a minor issue fixable with just adjusting a mechanical switch/mechanism in there somewhere. OR could be something bigger like a belt or other component failing.
Can anyone point me in the direction? If it's the latter, it's not really worth it to me to fix. However, I would be interested in swapping it for a DVD player (or something else?). Is this possible and what would it entail?
