I spoke with a auto dealer today about getting the road tar and rough debris off the bottom of my doors on my black Rogue and told me I could use Varsol and it would make the finish smooth again and then re apply the wax. Has anyone here used varsol to clean there car and did it damage the paint? I was hoping to try a clay bar first but he mentioned you might get scratches in the clear coat if you do not use it right and with the correct spray. Would like to get the paint smooth again so I can apply more wax.

There is a spray out called TarX which you should look into. YouTube should have videos of it in use. It can remove many tough stains without any scrubbing on your part.

TarX is also made by the people who make IronX. They make a product that combines TarX and IronX called Trix. IronX is meant to remove iron particles, such as brake dust. Again, YouTube can show you plenty of videos about it.

Varsol and any strong solvent like nail polish remover will definately remove the road tar but in my experience it will ruin your clear coat too. I used this method to remove hard tree sap from my hood and roof of an older car with black pain job - the tree sap dissolved readily and completely but I was left with halos in the paint whereever I had used the solvent.

I'd strongly recommend using a product that is designed for your paint sas TrevorK suggests. It won't remove the road tar as well as Varsol but it also won't ruin your paint.

i would stay away from harsh solvents as they will also remove wax, and instantly taint your clear coat which will need polishing and re-waxing.
with this bug & tar remover, i would simply re-wax the area just in case and be done with it.

Okay thanks. Would you still use a clay bar as well?

A Clay Bar is used to remove contaminates from the surface of your paint leaving your paint smooth. If you know how to use it, it cant hurt.

I never used one before but the kits come with the clay bar and the spray. It says just to glide it gently back and forth once you spray so does not look that hard to mess up. Just didn't know if I should use the clay or get the tar remover. I just want to make the paint smooth on the bottoms of my doors so I can wax.

you need big & tar remover for the sap.

clay bar only removes things the size of a grain of sand/salt and smaller. claybar wont remove sap. unless its microscopic.

Well I just used Goo gone for cars and it took most of the contaminants off. I think I may need a clay bar for the rest but it is smoother now.
