after 2 yrs. & 20k miles, 7 m1 10w30 oil changes the inside of oil fill hole is just as varnished as when i bought the 96 Qt with 98k miles. i did an bg engine flush within 1st. mo. of ownership. no change in varnish. i dont know why i worry about this, aged & anal perhaps. i would really like to have nice shiny internals but not at the cost of seal or gasket leaks. she runs near perfect(ocassionally bumpy idle), leaks nor uses any fluids. dear abby, what should i do?

switch to Redline oil, much stronger detergent package and the Ester basestock is naturally a better cleaner than Mobils mixture of group III and PAO basestocks. Might want to investigate an Auto ARX treatment,I have no personal experience with this product, but the oil gurus on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com swear by it.

I wouldnt have expected it to go away. Your best bet to clean stuff up is to use BG quick clean. Do weekly oil changes for a month, and at the end of each week use a can of quick clean. you have to gradually remove the buildup that has accumulated over 12 years.

There is a discussion in the oil thread from long ago about using highly agressive detergents in diesel grade oils.

Wes's advice is good, and you might consider an envirolution flush. But the varnish patiina is there to stay unless you remove it by hand. At least with M1 and frequent changes, you won't be adding to it.

Doing a total diassembly and treating each individual part differently with different solvents is the only way to remove embedded varnish. If Quick Clean won't clear it the next step is the parts washer and methyl chloride or acids and 375F heat in a special oven.

Obviously the later cannot be used on an assembled engine.

7 oil changes in 2 years is short of the 8 recommended [90days]! Small oil filter.
